Elite Bistro & Bar: South Indian and Indo-Chinese Flavours on Dunlop Street, Little India
Elite Bistro & Bar sits on Dunlop Street in the heart of Little India, one of Singapore's most characterful food neighbourhoods, and its name sets out the offer plainly: a kitchen that cooks South Indian and Indo-Chinese food with conviction, paired with a bar. The doors are open every day of the week from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM, so whether it is a long lunch, an early dinner before the evening crowd or a late, spicy plate after wandering the district, the timing works.
The menu is broader than the word bistro suggests. It is organised across chicken, egg, mutton, seafood, vegetable, snack, main course and salad sections, and two distinct culinary currents run through it. One is Tamil and South Indian cooking — the kind of food with roots in Madurai, Chinthamani and the coastal fish-fry traditions. The other is the Indo-Chinese wok kitchen: manchurians, chilli dishes, salt-and-pepper stir-fries and fried rice. Between the two, a lot of ground is covered, and the tandoor sits at the centre of it.
From the Tandoor
The tandoori list is where many tables start. Chicken Tandoori comes in full and half portions, the whole bird being the obvious choice when there are four or more of you. Around it sits a proper run of tikkas: Chicken Tikka; Hariyali Chicken Tikka with its green herb marinade; and Malai Chicken Tikka, which trades heat for cream. The same treatment extends to the sea with Hariyali Fish Tikka, Malai Fish Tikka and Malai Prawn Tikka, and to the vegetarian side of the menu, where Ajwaini Paneer Tikka — one of the newer additions — and Mushroom Tikka hold their own against the meat.
South Indian Soul, Street to Sea
The Tamil heart of the menu beats loudest in the chicken section. Chicken 65 is the deep-fried classic everyone expects; Madurai Chicken and Chinthamani Chicken go further into regional territory; Kozhi Uppu Curry (dry) rounds out a list built for sharing plates. Mutton Boti represents the mutton side of the kitchen, and the seafood list runs from Boneless Fish 65 and Kelangan Fish Fry to Fish Sambal and Chilli Fish.
There are quieter pleasures too. Egg dishes — Half Boil, Full Boil, Egg Bhurji and Egg Mass — are everyday Tamil cooking done plainly, and the idly gets a party spin with Chilli Idly and Garlic Idly. The most distinctive orders may be Idiyappam Kothu and Curry Leaves Idiyappam Kothu: string hoppers chopped and tossed kothu-style the way street vendors do it, with a curry-leaf perfumed version for good measure.
The Indo-Chinese Side
If the tandoor is one pole and the Tamil kitchen the other, the Indo-Chinese wok is the third force at work. Gobi Manchurian, Baby Corn Manchurian and Chicken Manchurian cover the tangy end; Chilli Chicken, Chilli Gobi, Chilli Mushroom, Chilli Garlic Fish and Fish Salt & Pepper cover the fiery one. Dragon Chicken, Ginger Chicken and Mushroom Pepper keep things interesting, and Chicken Fried Rice and Egg Fried Rice give the table a starchy anchor. For easy snacking, there is Masala Papad and French Fries.
Ordering In, or Sitting Down
The restaurant runs its own online ordering through its website: choose home delivery or pick up from the store, both handled from the same kitchen at 70 Dunlop Street, Singapore 209398. Prefer to talk to a person? The number is +65 8989 2468. The bar element in the name gives evenings here a slightly different rhythm than a straightforward South Indian eatery, and the late 11:00 PM close means Little India's evening crowd has somewhere solid to land. Order a spread — a tikka, a Tamil chicken, a chilli gobi and a kothu — and you will have covered most of what this kitchen does well.
