Stallions Bar & Eatery is a neighbourhood bar and restaurant on Victoria Street in central Cambridge, New Zealand, set within the Central Cambridge Carpark. It serves a full day of eating under one roof: a dedicated lunch menu from 11:00am to 2:30pm, then a dinner menu with the Magill's steak selection from 5:00pm, seven days a week until 8:00pm.

The kitchen leans towards generous, familiar plates done well — marinated fried chicken with home-made aioli, pork belly bites tossed in sweet chilli and bbq sauce, chilli garlic prawns in a creamy parmesan garlic chilli sauce, and a home-made seafood chowder with toasted ciabatta. Steak is the centrepiece at dinner, where 250gm Scotch and sirloin cuts lead a mains list that also takes in roasted duck breast, lamb parmentier, crispy pork belly, pan-seared salmon and a daily roast with the chef's special gravy.

There is plenty for lighter appetites and families too: five pizzas from Hawaiian to smoked chicken, burgers topped with onion rings and the chef's special sauce, a kids menu with nuggets, battered fish and chips, sundaes and a Belgium waffle, and desserts running from apple and pear crumble to an affogato with a choice of Baileys, Frangelico or Kahlua.

Stallions Bar & Eatery occupies a handy patch of central Cambridge, set within the Central Cambridge Carpark on Victoria Street. It is a place built to cover the whole day: doors open at 11:00am every day of the week, the kitchen serves a dedicated lunch menu until 2:30pm, then swings into dinner mode from 5:00pm through to closing at 8:00pm.

Lunch here leans hearty rather than fussy. There is an egg benny built on a Volare English muffin with poached eggs and hollandaise, a free-range omelette stuffed with onion, tomato, bacon and cheese, and braised beef cheeks with toasted french baguette, salad and fries. The fried chicken taco arrives with cilantro dressing, coleslaw and peri peri mayo, while the smokey sticky pork ribs come with coleslaw and potato wedges. If it is steak you are after at midday, the Magill's sirloin is topped with mushroom sauce and served with fries and salad, and the open steak sammy stacks sirloin on turkish ciabatta with beetroot relish.

Dinner is when the steaks come out

From 5:00pm the menu changes gear. The headline act is the Magill's steak selection — a 250gm Scotch or a 250gm sirloin — sitting alongside mains that run from pan-seared salmon in tuscan sauce and roasted duck breast with red wine and plum jus, to lamb parmentier with sliced boneless lamb rack, crispy pork belly with rosemary gratin and vermouth jus, and grilled coconut chicken with roasted baby potatoes.

Seafood holds its own too. The home-made seafood chowder comes with toasted ciabatta and garlic butter, and the dinner starter list stretches from pan-seared scallops with sauteed pancetta and butternut puree to chilli garlic prawns in a creamy parmesan garlic chilli sauce, crispy calamari, pumpkin and pea arancini, and a stuffed parmesan ciabatta for anyone who believes good bread and butter is a fine way to begin.

Pizza, burgers and the under-12s

Not every night calls for a steak knife. The pizza list covers the classics — Hawaiian, pepperoni and chorizo, beef and bacon made with Magill's beef and bbq sauce — plus a vegetarian loaded with mushroom, spinach, sun-dried tomato, olives and cherry tomato. Burgers arrive with fries: the beef version stacks caramelised onion, aged cheddar, pickles and onion rings under the chef's special sauce, with a southern fried chicken burger beside it. Sides fill the gaps, from loaded wedges with sour cream, bacon, sweet chilli and mozzarella to straight cut fries and onion rings.

Families are properly catered for. The kids menu runs to chicken nuggets, battered fish and chips, a simple cheese pizza, a chocolate sundae and a Belgium waffle with ice-cream. Grown-ups can linger over desserts — apple and pear crumble, home-made cheesecake, a brownie sundae, a chocolate brownie, or an affogato poured over vanilla ice-cream with a shot of espresso and a choice of Baileys, Frangelico or Kahlua.
