After almost three years trading in Three Kings, the pair expanded to a second location in Birkenhead, and later a third in Newmarket.

From Food Truck to Garage Door

Cheese on Toast started life in 2019, set up behind a garage door in an unconventional Three Kings space by founders Steve Kennedy and Yang Yang. The pair had already spent four years roaming Auckland and further afield, serving toasties from their food truck, before deciding to settle down and create a laid-back, approachable space where people could enjoy quality food that wouldn't break the bank. After nearly three years trading in Three Kings, the team expanded to a second site in Birkenhead, and later a third in Newmarket.

The Toasties and Toast

Every toastie starts with two slices of house-made sourdough and the café's signature three cheese blend, served with a side of pickles. The Just Cheese toastie showcases that blend on its own — vintage gouda, maasdam and parmesan — while other options push further, from a Braised Pork Belly toastie finished with Sichuan spices and ginger sauce, to a Rump Steak toastie with a lemon, soy, chilli and garlic sauce. On the toast side, a thick slice of house-made sourdough carries toppings like whipped feta and candied pepitas on the Mushroom toast, or Aoraki smoked salmon with cream cheese, capers and dill.
