Plain Vanilla is a Singapore bakery café brand built around the idea that "simple is satisfying," with eight cafés spread across the island, each designed to reflect the character of its neighbourhood. The flagship store in Tiong Bahru carries the largest selection of bakes, a daily brunch menu, and the full range of the brand's grocer line, Plain Vanilla Foods, alongside an ever-changing selection of homeware.
Across its cafés, Plain Vanilla serves signature cupcakes, whole and sliced cakes, all-day bakes, and coffee, with individual locations adding their own twist — from Telok Ayer's deli-style hot mains cooked a la minute, to TANGS at Tang Plaza's farmer's-market-inspired setup with Allpress coffee and specialty beverages, to East Coast's especially extensive brunch menu. Beyond the cafés, Plain Vanilla also offers cakes and bakes to order in advance or same-day, celebration cakes for birthdays and baby-related occasions, à la carte party catering, and venue hire.
One outlet, at ION Orchard, is currently closed, while a Holland Village location is planned to reopen in 2027.
Plain Vanilla sums up its philosophy in three words: simple is satisfying. Across eight café locations in Singapore, the bakery brand serves its signature cupcakes, whole and sliced cakes, all-day bakes and coffee, with each café designed to reflect the character and history of its own neighbourhood rather than following a single cookie-cutter format.
The Tiong Bahru store, located at 1D Yong Siak Street in the quaint Tiong Bahru estate, is Plain Vanilla's flagship. It carries the largest selection of bakes across the brand, a daily brunch menu, the full range of Plain Vanilla's grocer brand, Plain Vanilla Foods, and an ever-changing selection of homeware — making it as much a destination as any single café.
Each of Plain Vanilla's other cafés carries its own distinct identity. TANGS at Tang Plaza, at 310 Orchard Road B1-12, takes inspiration from the spirit of a farmer's market stall, with hand-finished details and a generous display of bakes alongside fresh salads, Allpress coffee and specialty beverages, open daily from 8am to 9pm — later than the rest of the group.
Upper Thomson, at 244F Upper Thomson Road, leans into a slower rhythm with granite counters, curved oak panels and a flowing communal table. Serangoon Gardens, at 55 Serangoon Garden Way, nods to the neighbourhood's history as Ang Sar Lee ("red zinc roofs" in dialect), with corrugated metal panels and a Community Bookshelf lining the space.
Telok Ayer, at 134 Telok Ayer Street in the CBD, was Plain Vanilla's first foray into a deli-style menu, offering meat, fish and vegetarian hot mains cooked a la minute in an on-site kitchen — a step beyond the brand's usual bakes-and-coffee format. Neil Road, at 167 Neil Road, draws on the Peranakan spirit of "Tok Panjang," gathering around a long table, with an open-plan layout and a large communal table for conversation. East Coast, at 199 East Coast Road, sits among a row of shophouses and offers the brand's most extensive brunch menu alongside its usual cupcake mainstays. Cluny Court, at 501 Bukit Timah Road #01-03A, occupies a historic building near the Singapore Botanic Gardens, serving signature bakes and coffee as a tea-time stop or post-stroll rest.
An ION Orchard outlet has since closed, while a Holland Village location is planned to reopen in 2027.
Plain Vanilla's offering extends well past walk-in café visits. Its Cakes & Bakes range covers cupcakes, whole cakes, minis and bakes boxes, and add-ons, available to order in advance, alongside a same-day collection for last-minute needs. For celebrations, the brand offers birthday layer cakes and baby-themed cakes for occasions like baby showers.
For groups and events, Plain Vanilla runs an à la carte party catering menu spanning Breakfast, Lunch, High Tea and Drinks — described as a mini buffet of the brand's signature bakes in petite sizes alongside a wholesome deli selection, suited to office meetings, birthday parties and afternoon tea. Catering orders require at least three to four days' notice before 2pm, and self-pickup for sandwiches, salads and fruit platters is only available at the Neil Road café. Each party platter comes with a labelled tag for clear presentation at an event.
Beyond food, Plain Vanilla also offers venue hire for events and maintains a curated in-café playlist, extending the brand's attention to detail beyond just what's on the menu.
Most Plain Vanilla cafés are open daily from around 7.30am to 7pm, with some variation — TANGS at Tang Plaza runs until 9pm, Cluny Court until 7.30pm, and Telok Ayer closes earlier on Sundays and public holidays (5pm, versus 7pm on other days). With eight distinct locations across the island, each offering its own take on the brand's simple, satisfying approach to baking, Plain Vanilla positions itself as both a neighbourhood café and a destination bakery, depending on which outlet you visit.
