DOC says the track is open, but walkers need to drop into the creek bed of Bridle Veil Stream. That section is uneven and rocky, and a partial bridge can be used when the stream is low but may be impassable during and after heavy rain, in which case you need to turn back. Dogs are not allowed in the park. DOC also notes that the park is rugged and mountainous, so it pays to check current track conditions and the weather before you go, wear sturdy footwear and treat any stream crossing with caution. The Avalanche Creek Shelter campsite sits just off the main road in Arthur's Pass village, almost opposite the visitor centre.
