A conservation area of large limestone outcrops beside State Highway 73 in the Waimakariri Basin, about 80 minutes from Christchurch. The site is known as Kura Tāwhiti (Castle Hill), and it is a place of special significance to Ngāi Tahu and a wāhi tapu, or sacred place. It is popular with climbers and boulderers, and has many bolted climbs.
Families and walkers use the access track, and the website describes the rocks as karst landscape formed from limestone. Visitors must stay on the access track, because the paddocks are private property. Eating and drinking are allowed only in the car park and at the picnic table. Drones need a permit, and temporary access restrictions to climbing sites must be respected. The area is home to some of the rarest plants in Canterbury, so visitors are asked to avoid trampling plants and to follow the visitor code of conduct.
