St Peter's Anglican Preschool opened in August 2019 on Yaldhurst Road in Sockburn, Christchurch. It is a multicultural, family-friendly preschool that has built strong links with its local community, and is licensed for 44 children.
The preschool nurtures children from approximately 1.3 to 5 years old, with children able to stay on until their 6th birthday. Its learning programme is grounded in Biblical teaching alongside the principles of Te Whāriki, the New Zealand early childhood education curriculum, guiding children's cognitive, emotional, physical, intellectual, language and social development.
Children move through named rooms as they grow: Koru for toddlers and under-2s learning through curiosity and play, Kowhai as a preparatory stage building language and social skills, Keas as a transition stage developing leadership and pre-literacy skills, and Kauri as a dedicated new-entrants-level programme focused on literacy, numeracy and reading ahead of school. Van transportation is available for enrolled families needing pick-up and drop-off.
The preschool is staffed by a head teacher and a team of room teachers, a wellbeing teacher, a van driver and administrators who also support the wider church.
St Peter's Anglican Preschool has been part of the Sockburn community in Christchurch since it opened in August 2019. Located on Yaldhurst Road, the preschool is licensed for 44 children and describes itself as a multicultural, family-friendly environment that has developed strong links with the community around it.
The preschool nurtures children from around 1.3 years old through to age 5, with the option for children to stay on until their 6th birthday if that suits a family's schooling timeline. Underpinning everything is a belief that each child is a gift from God and is best taught well while young — a philosophy that shapes a learning programme combining Biblical teaching with Te Whāriki, New Zealand's official early childhood education curriculum. Together, these guide how the preschool supports each child's cognitive, emotional, physical, intellectual, language and social development.
Rather than a single mixed-age room, St Peter's organises children into stages that match how they learn at each age. Koru is the settling-in room for toddlers, built around curiosity, active exploration and play, with children learning alongside one another. A dedicated space within Koru caters for five children under two years old.
As children grow, they move into Kowhai, the preparatory stage, where teachers follow each child's sustained interests and extend their language and social skills accordingly. From there, Keas is the transition stage: children develop as confident, competent learners in communicating, discovering, exploring and negotiating, while being prepared to read and write and building leadership skills as "master players." The Keas session runs from 11:15 to 12:15, after which the children join the Kowhai room for lunch.
For children heading toward school, Kauri is a dedicated teaching programme with more focused literacy, numeracy and reading skills pitched at a new-entrants level, designed to give children a good start for school. It runs each morning from 9:15 to 11:00, including morning tea.
St Peter's offers van transportation for enrolled families who need pick-up and drop-off as part of the daily routine — families can ask about including this during the enrolment process.
On cost, 3 to 5 year olds receive 20 hours of ECE-funded free care per week, with any additional hours charged at $10 per hour. Children under 3 are charged $7 per hour. Families may also be eligible for WINZ subsidies to help with costs, which is worth raising directly with the preschool during enrolment.
The preschool operates Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:30pm, for 49 weeks of the year. It stays open during most school holidays, closing only for three weeks over the Christmas and New Year period, and is closed on public holidays. Attendance during school holidays is optional, though the preschool appreciates parents letting staff know in the last week of term if they plan to attend over the break.
St Peter's is led by Head Teacher Liz, supported by Kowhai teachers Amy and Dee, Koru and under-2s teacher Becca, and wellbeing teacher and van driver Clementine, alongside van driver Mr Murray. The administration side, including preschool and church administration, is handled by Shyuan, Grace and Reina — reflecting the preschool's close connection to St Peter's Anglican Church.
For families in Sockburn looking for a faith-based early learning environment with a clear, age-staged programme and support around transport and funding, St Peter's Anglican Preschool offers a settled, community-connected option from toddlerhood through to school age.
