Deb's Place Early Learning Centre is a family-owned preschool in Addington, Christchurch, offering a warm, homely environment where passionate and experienced teachers nurture children's growth. The centre has one of the largest outdoor playgrounds among Christchurch preschools, giving children plenty of space to explore, learn and build confidence, and is guided by the philosophy "Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti ō tātou māhi" — let the uniqueness of the child guide our work.
The preschool has deep roots in the local community: originally named Donald Duck, it was one of the first four preschools in Christchurch and has served the Addington community since 1964. After months of renovation, the centre was re-licensed and reopened in July 2021 by mother-and-daughter duo Deb and Amy, who bring more than 40 years of combined experience in early childhood education. Despite opening shortly before COVID lockdowns, the centre has steadily grown, building relationships with a diverse whānau community.
Situated just off Lincoln Road and Brougham Street, Deb's Place is convenient for local families as well as parents commuting into the city. The centre is committed to providing high-quality early childhood education at affordable prices, supporting children and whānau in the local community, and welcomes families of all backgrounds.
Tucked into Macaulay Street in Addington, Deb's Place Early Learning Centre carries a history that stretches back further than most Christchurch preschools. Originally opened as Donald Duck, the centre was one of the first four preschools in Christchurch and has served the local Addington community since 1964.
After months of hands-on renovation, the preschool was re-licensed and reopened in July 2021 under new ownership: mother-and-daughter duo Deb and Amy. Between them, they bring more than 40 years of combined experience in early childhood education, and their goal in taking over the centre was to bring high-quality childcare and education back to the Addington community, with a nurturing, homely atmosphere at its core.
The renovation itself was a genuine labour of love. The team tackled a major playground demolition, uncovering unexpected brickwork along the way, before moving the centre's whare to a more accessible location for children. They then hand-moved 35 cubic metres of new bark for the playground, before taking on a full demolition and renovation of the bathrooms, complete with re-plumbed sinks. Walls were patched and repainted, shelving repaired, and eventually new asphalt and grass transformed the back yard into the space families see today. Despite COVID lockdowns hitting shortly after reopening, the centre steadily grew as Deb and Amy built relationships with a diverse whānau community.
One of Deb's Place's defining features is its outdoor playground, described as one of the biggest among Christchurch preschools. It includes a large grass area, bike tracks, a sandpit, a mud kitchen with its own herb garden, and mature fruit trees. Outdoor play and learning is encouraged every day, regardless of weather, supported by an undercover sandpit for wetter days. Indoors, the centre offers an open, homely area alongside a dedicated reading nook and a nursery room for its youngest children.
Deb's Place caters to children from infancy through to school age. Its nursery is available for children under 2, though space is limited, and families are encouraged to visit and secure a place early. For children over 2.5 years, the preschool programme offers 20 hours free or 30 hours for $30, subject to conditions — part of the centre's broader commitment to affordable, high-quality early childhood education. Home-cooked lunches are also provided, another way the centre aims to make daily life easier for busy whānau.
Testimonials from parents consistently point to the same themes: a caring, professional team that treats children like their own, a strong sense of whānau among staff and families, and genuine enthusiasm from children about attending. Several parents specifically mention the large outdoor play area and the range of equipment available, alongside praise for how welcomed and heard they feel as parents navigating early childhood decisions.
Located just off Lincoln Road and Brougham Street, Deb's Place is convenient both for local Addington families and for parents commuting into the city for work. With several children recently graduating on to school, the centre currently has a small number of spaces available. Families interested in enrolling or simply wanting a look around are encouraged to get in touch to arrange a visit and meet the teaching team.
