Bishopdale Community Preschool is a community-based, not-for-profit childcare centre in Bishopdale, Christchurch, offering affordable, flexible care and education for tamariki aged 0-5. Established by the community within the Bishopdale Mall complex over 40 years ago, the centre has operated from the Breens Intermediate School site on Breens Road since the Christchurch earthquake disruption and opened its purpose-built building there in 2016. It runs as a registered society, with surplus funds reinvested into developing the centre and a volunteer parent governance board working alongside the teaching team and centre manager.
The centre has two learning rooms, each with outdoor play. The nursery is a calm, nurturing space for pēpi and toddlers under two, licensed for just 10 children and following a respectful, RIE-inspired approach in which kaiako take time to observe, listen and respond with care. The preschool room welcomes children over two, built around a large open garden with strong teacher-to-child ratios and an intentional programme that encourages children to think, ask questions, work together and express themselves.
Teaching is led by a 100% fully qualified team of nine kaiako, guided by four values — manaakitanga, kotahitanga, mātauranga and kaitiakitanga — visible in daily practice. Families choose from three session lengths with start and finish times in 15-minute increments, and the 20 Hours subsidy for 3 and 4-year-olds and WINZ subsidies help keep quality care accessible. The centre is open Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm, and currently has spaces available and welcomes enquiries from new whānau.
