About The Loft Bar

The Loft Bar sits on level 1 at 93 Cashel Street, right in the heart of Christchurch's central city. Its self-appointed brief was to elevate the sports bar experience, and the setting does the talking: a New York loft-inspired space with a warm, industrial edge and a 167-inch LED wall anchoring the room. Doors open every day from 12:00 and the bar runs until late.

Live sport is the reason many people climb the stairs. Fixtures big and small play out at full scale on that LED wall — 'the best seat in the city', in the team's words — and a live sports calendar on the website makes it easy to plan a visit around the matches that matter. The motto hanging over it all: because win, lose or draw, it's probably time for a drink.

The kitchen is a genuine drawcard rather than an afterthought. Signature wings (all gluten free) lead the way, backed by crème fraiche-based flatbreads, tacos, pizzas, salads, sundaes and a game day bites list that runs from BBQ pork ribs to brisket sliders and fried cauliflower. Groups gravitate to The Champion, a platter stacked with wings, sliders, fried chicken, poppers, chicken parm and fries.

The drinks list is just as considered: Kaiser Bros beers on tap, Smithereens Hard Soda Brewery flavours, a cocktail list with real personality, tapped cocktails mixed fresh, and a wine list spanning Marlborough sauvignon blanc to Central Otago pinot noir — with non-alcoholic spritzes and G&Ts for those sitting out. Weekly rituals give every day its own offer, The LUNCH anchors the weekend, the MVP Club returns 5% cashback plus a $30 birthday voucher, and functions and gift vouchers round out a bar built for more than just match day.

The Loft Bar Christchurch: Live Sport, Signature Wings and Elevated Cocktails Above Cashel Street

Perched on level 1 at 93 Cashel Street in the heart of Christchurch's central city, The Loft Bar set out with a simple brief: elevate the sports bar experience. Inspired by the lofts of New York, the venue swaps the usual sticky carpets for a considered, loft-style interior — and puts a 167-inch LED wall at the centre of it all. Doors open every day from 12:00 and the bar runs until late.

Sport is the heartbeat of the room. Rugby, cricket, football and just about anything else with a scoreboard plays out at enormous scale, and The Loft keeps a live sports calendar on its website so you can plan your visit around the fixtures that matter to you. The team's own motto sums up the philosophy nicely: because win, lose or draw, it's probably time for a drink.

Not your typical sports bar food

The kitchen takes game day eating seriously. The headliner is the signature wings: every batch is gluten free, served with ranch dressing, and comes plain or dressed in buffalo or Kansas BBQ sauce, or coated in peri peri, jerk, red curry or super-hot seasoning.

Beyond the wings you'll find crème fraiche-based flatbreads — half-size pizzas described as 'a little lighter and fresher', with a gluten-free base available — alongside tacos filled with carnitas, chipotle honey chicken or smoked brisket. The game day bites list runs deep: BBQ pork ribs with Memphis rub and Kansas sauce, chicken croquettes, mozzarella sticks, Agria fries with the signature Kaiser seasoning, loaded fries, chicken parm, fried chicken with gravy and brisket sliders.

Lighter eaters are looked after too, with fried cauliflower, grilled asparagus with miso-tofu cream, pizzas, salads and sundaes to finish. Come with a crew and The Champion does the deciding for you — one enormous platter stacked with signature wings, fried cauliflower, fried chicken, beef and bacon sliders, jalapeno poppers, chicken parm, fries and a lineup of dipping sauces. And when the night runs long, a late night menu keeps the kitchen firing with cauliflower, mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers and fries.

What's pouring

The tap list leans on some firm friendships. Kaiser Bros beers flow alongside Asahi, Peroni, Pure Blonde and Balter's XPA and Easy Hazy, with Smithereens Hard Soda Brewery's lemonade and Brookvale Union ginger beer adding something different — plus a rotating guest tap and, unusually for a bar, tapped cocktails mixed fresh and changed regularly. Ask your server what's on today.

Bottled options run from Corona and Heineken to low-alcohol picks like Asahi 0.0% and State of Play IPA. The wine list travels from Marlborough sauvignon blanc and Giesen chardonnay to Central Otago pinot noir and Barossa shiraz, with prosecco, sparkling rosé and proper champagne for celebrations. The cocktail list has personality to spare — Main Squeeze, Perky Nana Milk Punch, Hot Take, Bad Decisions — and your friendly server can sort out any classics you're craving, while the Curious range of non-alcoholic spritzes and G&Ts keeps designated drivers in the game.

Rituals, rewards and functions

There's a rhythm to the week here. Each day carries its own 'weekly ritual' — a rotating programme of offers that gives regulars a reason to keep coming back — and The LUNCH has been introduced as a new weekend ritual built around Saturdays in the city.

Regulars can also join the MVP Club, which earns 5% cashback on purchases, a $30 birthday voucher and access to exclusive promotions and event pre-sales. Planning something bigger? There's a dedicated functions offering with its own menu, and gift vouchers for the hard-to-buy-for sports fan in your life.

Bookings can be made online, or you can call 03 365 5638 or email [email protected]. Win, lose or draw — you'll find The Loft waiting on level 1 at 93 Cashel Street.
