Smoke Ashburton is a family-owned barbecue restaurant and bar bringing authentic American low-and-slow barbecue to Mid Canterbury. Born out of a passion that started in 2019 at Lake Hood with a 1.5-tonne smoker, Smoke has grown into a beloved destination dedicated to wood smoke, genuine hospitality, and time-honoured pitmaster traditions.
Housed in a purpose-built, warehouse-style space designed for connection and shared experiences, the restaurant focuses on quality meats seasoned with custom rubs and slow-cooked to tenderness. From hearty brisket, sticky ribs, and pulled meats to craft burgers, comforting bar snacks, and signature platters, the kitchen champions generous, flavour-packed dining. A dedicated on-site bar complements the barbecue with creative cocktails and a curated lineup of craft beers.
Alongside casual lunches and family dinners, the venue features Smoulder, an exclusive private dining room and lounge designed for intimate gatherings, celebrations, and cocktail functions.
The story of Smoke traces back to 2019 along the shores of Lake Hood in Ashburton. Equipped with a hefty 1.5-tonne smoker and a straightforward dream, the founding team set out to bring authentic American-style low-and-slow barbecue to Canterbury. Even when national lockdowns struck just as the first cuts were seasoned, the pit crew pressed forward, launching as a community takeaway as soon as restrictions permitted. The local appetite for genuine wood-smoked meats quickly turned Smoke into a household name, leading to their first standalone eatery in Rolleston in 2021 and eventually their purpose-built Ashburton restaurant in 2023.
Today, Smoke Ashburton operates out of a spacious, warehouse-style venue situated on Cameron Street in Allenton. It is designed from the ground up as a social hub—a relaxed, welcoming environment where friends, families, and barbecue enthusiasts gather over hearty boards of meat, chilled craft beers, and creative cocktails.
True American barbecue demands patience, precision, and respect for ingredients. At Smoke Ashburton, the kitchen team adheres strictly to traditional smoking methods, using wood fire and steady heat over many hours to transform cuts into tender, succulent dishes. Beef and lamb cuts are sourced locally through ANZCO, ensuring that prime South Island produce anchors the pitmaster lineup.
Meats are coated in tailored dry rubs and marinades before entering the smoker. The results speak for themselves: juicy brisket boasting a classic bark, fall-apart sticky ribs, tender pork belly, and moist smoked chicken. For diners who want to sample the breadth of the day's cook, the Smoke Platter brings together three featured cuts on one sharing board, delivering the full barbecue experience in one sitting.
Beyond traditional barbecue trays, Smoke Ashburton features an active bar program and an expansive casual dining menu. Crispy chicken wings come tossed either in classic tangy buffalo sauce with cooling ranch and celery sticks or in a rich, house-made brown sugar bourbon glaze. Other crowd favourites include buttermilk southern fried chicken paired with jalapeño mayo and pickles, alongside twice-cooked pork belly bites glazed with chilli maple.
The beverage list is designed specifically to balance the bold flavours of wood smoke and spice. Guests can unwind with inventive cocktails shaken to order or choose from a curated selection of regional craft beers on tap and in bottles. For diners seeking casual comfort, gourmet burgers, loaded fries, sliders, and tacos provide ideal accompaniments to an afternoon drink.
For private celebrations, work gatherings, or landmark events, Smoke Ashburton also houses Smoulder—a dedicated private dining room and lounge situated at the rear of the building. With space to seat 40 guests for dinner or host up to 60 for cocktail-style events, it provides an intimate, stylish retreat while retaining full access to the venue's signature smokehouse catering.
