Joo Chiat Road itself is named after Chew Joo Chiat, a wealthy Chinese landowner from the early 1900s, and the area's pre-war architecture — colourful double-storey shophouses with ornate facades and intricate tiles — gives the neighbourhood a distinctly Peranakan character that frames the restaurant's setting.
