BREAD CRÉATEUR @ Hillford is the Bukit Timah outpost of a small Singapore artisan bakery whose name is a French expression meaning 'bread creator'. Established in 2018 out of a passion for artisan bread, the bakery builds every loaf and pastry from scratch using French flour, butter and an in-house starter, with no chemical additives in the process.
The craft is deliberately slow. The bakery relies on traditional baking processes, producing its own starter that undergoes a cold fermentation of at least 18 hours. That long rest develops deeper flavour and, as the bakers note, allows the enzymes in the bread to break down gluten that many people find hard to digest — part of their commitment to offering a healthier source of bread and pastries. Each dough is hand-kneaded under well-controlled time and temperature into its own unique design, hence 'creator of the bread'.
The counter at The Hillford stocks the full range: sourdoughs in round, loaf, onion and cheese, multigrain, fig and rye versions, French baguettes, ciabatta, wholemeal and pain de mie, brioche burger buns, mixed-seed bagels, and viennoiserie including croissants, pain au chocolat, almond croissants and kouign amann. There are also boxes of butter and cranberry scones, fudgy brownies, and party bundles from mini croissant packs to full artisan bread assortments.
Beyond the counter, BREAD CRÉATEUR supplies a wide variety of cafes, home businesses and high-end restaurants, and welcomes wholesale and estate group-buy enquiries. The shop trades Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4.30pm, and a sister outlet operates at 33 Eng Kong Terrace.
Tucked into the ground floor of The Hillford along Jalan Jurong Kechil, BREAD CRÉATEUR @ Hillford is the Bukit Timah face of a small Singapore bakery with a simple philosophy: bread made slowly, by hand, the French way. The name is a French expression meaning "bread creator", and since 2018 the team has taken it literally — every loaf and pastry is built from scratch using French flour, butter and an in-house starter, with no chemical additives anywhere in the process.
Walk in and you are smelling the result of a long process. The bakery relies on traditional methods: its own starter goes through a cold fermentation of at least 18 hours before it ever meets the oven. That patience does two things, the bakers say — it develops deeper flavour, and it lets the enzymes in the bread break down gluten that many people find hard to digest. Each dough is hand-kneaded under well-controlled time and temperature into its own unique design, which is where the "creator" part of the name earns its keep.
Health sits quietly behind the whole operation. The founders started BREAD CRÉATEUR in 2018 out of a passion for artisan bread and a wish to introduce it to a larger group of consumers, and they remain committed to offering a healthier source of bread and pastries — one reason the sourdoughs get top billing.
The sourdough family is the heart of the menu: a round loaf and a full 800g loaf for the table, plus variations studded with onion and cheese, multigrain, figs and rye. Alongside them sit a crisp French baguette, rustic ciabatta in plain and olive versions, soft wholemeal sliced bread, fine-crumbed pain de mie, buttery brioche burger buns and chewy mixed-seed bagels. There is even a croque monsieur built on the house bread, and a chocolate almond banana loaf for the sweet-leaning.
The viennoiserie case is where the French theme really sings. The croissant is the shop's signature buttery bake, joined by pain au chocolat, almond croissants and the kouign amann — the caramelised Breton pastry that turns butter and sugar into a crisp, sticky-edged treat. Boxes of butter, cranberry and mixed scones cover afternoon tea, and the artisan fudgy brownie box (with a nut-free tray available for events) handles the chocolate crowd.
Feeding a group? The bundles menu reads like a party planner: mini croissant, mini pain au chocolat and mini almond croissant party packs of twenty pieces each, larger pastry party packs, an artisan bread party pack with the full collection, a sourdough box "for the healthy peeps", a pastries box and a best-of-both-worlds box.
The Hillford shop keeps bakery hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4.30pm, closed on Mondays. If you would rather not leave things to chance, orders for delivery or self-collection can be placed online two days in advance with a 12pm cut-off; delivery carries a minimum order of $30 with a flat $10 charge, waived for orders above $200.
BREAD CRÉATEUR has also grown well beyond its counters — it supplies a wide variety of cafes, home businesses and high-end restaurants, and welcomes wholesale and estate group-buy enquiries. A sister outlet operates at 33 Eng Kong Terrace, also closed on Mondays.
What keeps people coming back to Jalan Jurong Kechil is the combination of honest technique and everyday warmth: bread with a proper crust and a tangy crumb, laminated pastries that shatter, and a team that bakes everything in-house. Whether you are after a weekday loaf, a box of scones for tea or twenty mini croissants for a party, this is a neighbourhood boulangerie that takes its time — so your bread does not have to.
