Space is a yoga and meditation studio perched at the top of Mt Victoria on Lookout Rd, above Wellington Harbour and about two kilometres from the hustle and bustle of the city. Built by Lana Bright and Oliver Ferry — who lived beside this special piece of land for 25 years — the studio was created for everyone to enjoy the ever-changing landscape of sea, hills and sky that frames every practice.
The intention here is simple: to offer a rejuvenating, mindful yoga and meditation space where you can feel calm, well and thrive. Space believes that when we practice together, in an uplifting environment and supported by skillful, caring teachers, it becomes far easier to feel both energised and relaxed.
Alongside regular yoga and meditation classes, the studio offers 'Your Space' one-to-one sessions that customise yoga and mindfulness just for you — with the whole studio to yourself. There's mindful coaching and mentoring, mindful sessions, presentations and workshops for workplaces and groups, and custom-designed mindfulness experiences on request. The events calendar brings special one-offs such as a Harmonic Sound Journey and Silent Retreats, while teacher trainings serve those ready to take their practice much further. As the owners put it: see you soon ~ ma te wa.
At the top of Mt Victoria, where Lookout Rd climbs away from the central city, you'll find Space — a yoga and meditation studio with one of the most naturally beautiful settings of any practice space in Wellington. From here, above the harbour, the view is a constant, slow-changing performance of sea, hills and sky. The city's hustle and bustle is only two kilometres away, yet the pace here feels a world apart.
Space was created by Lana Bright and Oliver Ferry, who lived beside this special piece of land for 25 years before building the studio, as they put it, 'for all of us to enjoy the ever-changing landscape of sea, hills & sky.' There's a genuine sense of gratitude in the way they talk about the place, and it carries through to how they welcome visitors. Their sign-off — 'See you soon ~ Ma te wa' — sets the tone: unhurried, warm and quietly confident that you'll be back.
The studio's stated intention is simple: to create a rejuvenating mindful yoga and meditation space where you can feel calm, well and thrive. Underpinning that is a belief that practice works best when it's shared — that when we practice together, in an uplifting environment, supported by skillful and caring teachers, we more easily feel both energized and relaxed. That dual promise — energy and ease — runs through everything on offer here.
If you're picturing a hushed room and nothing else, adjust the picture slightly: this is a studio that treats its surroundings as part of the practice. The harbour, the hills and the big Wellington sky aren't a backdrop so much as a co-teacher.
Regular yoga and meditation classes sit at the heart of the timetable, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to experienced practitioners. The emphasis on skillful, caring teaching means you're supported wherever you're starting from, whether that's your very first class or your five-hundredth.
For those who want the whole studio to themselves, Space offers 'Your Space' — personalised one-to-one sessions designed entirely around you. Whether you're new to yoga and mindfulness or seeking to fine-tune and develop an existing practice, a skillful teacher works with you one-on-one: exploring practices, finding postures for your unique alignment, answering questions and deepening your understanding of how body, mind and breath fit together. It's a rare format — an entire studio held just for you — and a gentle way in if group classes feel like a big first step.
Space's work reaches well beyond the weekly timetable. The studio offers mindful coaching and mentoring for individuals, and for workplaces it runs mindful sessions, presentations and workshops — bringing the same grounded approach into the workday. There's also an open invitation for anything more particular: tell them what interests you, and they'll design and create a mindfulness experience for you. It's an unusually flexible offer, and it reflects the studio's core idea that mindfulness can be shaped to fit real lives and real schedules.
The events programme adds seasonal one-offs to the regular rhythm. Special events have included a Harmonic Sound Journey and not one but two Silent Retreats — the kind of deeper experiences that give regulars a reason to keep an eye on the calendar. For those drawn to go much further with their practice, Space also runs yoga teacher trainings, extending the studio's role from a place to practice into a place to learn to teach.
