About Massey University Gym

Massey University Gym in Wellington offers a fully supervised training space open to everyone, not just students and staff. Housed on the Wellington campus, the gym is described as having an amazing range of strength and conditioning equipment in a medium-sized, well-organised space, suited to first-time gym-goers and experienced lifters alike.

Every membership comes with trainers on hand to help, along with 12 free personal training sessions through the gym's 'How to Gym' programme, Group Training classes, and Yoga classes. The equipment lineup covers cardio (stair machines, rowers, assault bikes, treadmills and bikes), strength training (cable machines, squat racks, bench presses, and dumbbells from 1kg to 55kg), and functional training (sled, gymnastic rings, kettlebells, battle ropes and more).

New members can start with a 7-day free trial to see what the gym is like and meet the team, though during certain peak periods of the year the gym can reach capacity, which may delay the start of some free trials - reception can advise on current capacity.

The gym positions itself as one of the best in Wellington and one of the most welcoming places in the city to try yoga, with a training philosophy built around helping members build confidence and quality movement habits over time rather than throwing them in the deep end.

Massey University Gym Wellington: Open to Everyone, Built for Every Fitness Level

Massey University's Wellington gym has built its reputation on being genuinely open to everyone, not just the university's own students and staff. Housed on the Wellington campus, the gym describes itself as having an amazing range of strength and conditioning equipment packed into a medium-sized, well-organised space - and says people describe it as one of the best gyms in Wellington.

Start With a Free Trial

Anyone curious about the gym can begin with a 7-day free trial, a chance to see what membership is actually like and meet the friendly team before committing. It's worth noting that during certain peak periods of the year, the gym's relatively compact size means it can reach capacity, which may delay the start of some free trials - the team at reception can advise on current capacity if you're planning a visit during a busy stretch.

A Fully Supervised Floor

Every membership comes with access to a fully supervised gym floor, with trainers always on hand to help. That support extends well beyond just having staff present - new members get access to the 'How to Gym' programme, a structured introduction built around 12 free personal training sessions. Each 30-minute session builds on the last, developing quality movement habits along the way. By the end of the programme, members are able to use 95% of the gym's equipment safely and with far more confidence.

Group Training and Yoga

For those who prefer working out alongside others, Group Training classes run for 40 minutes and are designed to give members a complete fitness experience across the week: each week starts with legs and low-impact cardio, moves through core work, and finishes with upper body training and some high-intensity interval training. Coaches work with members at whatever level they're at, whether that's a complete beginner or an experienced gym athlete, helping build confidence and skills across a range of movements. Weekday classes run at 8am, 12pm, 4pm and 6pm.

Yoga is also part of the weekly programme, with classes pitched as great for beginners - the first two classes of each calendar month cover the basics, with sessions gradually becoming more physical and technical as the month progresses and members' ability grows. Mats, blocks and yoga straps are all provided at no additional cost, and the gym describes itself as one of the most welcoming places to try yoga in Wellington.

What's on the Gym Floor

The equipment itself spans three main categories. Cardio options include stair machines, rowers, assault bikes, treadmills and bikes. For strength training, there are cable machines, squat racks, bench presses, and dumbbells ranging from 1kg all the way up to 55kg. Functional training equipment rounds things out with a sled, gymnastic rings, kettlebells, battle ropes, and more - giving members enough variety to build a well-rounded programme without needing to look elsewhere.
