Wellington Central Early Learning Centre is a Barnardos-run early childhood centre located at 74 Webb Street, Te Aro, right in the heart of Wellington city. Led by Centre Manager Dee, the centre welcomes tamariki aged 0–6 years and is built around a bright, stimulating and safe indoor and outdoor environment.
The centre has its own vegetable garden set within a large, ground-floor outdoor area, giving children natural equipment and resources to explore. The indoor spaces are purpose-built to be light, bright and airy, designed to stimulate the natural curiosity of tamariki.
As part of Barnardos Aotearoa, the centre draws on more than 55 years of early learning experience across New Zealand. Teaching is guided by Te Whāriki, New Zealand's early childhood curriculum, with kaiako working closely with each child to reflect their individual needs and interests.
Families are kept connected through Storypark, an online platform sharing photos, videos and learning observations, and through Tāku Pukapuka, an individual scrapbook-style learning portfolio gifted to whānau when a child moves on from the centre. The centre also emphasises community connection, with local excursions and garden-to-table activities linking children to their environment.
Extended hours from 7:00am to 6:00pm support busy whānau, longer work hours and city commutes, and nutritious meals including breakfast, lunch, and morning and afternoon tea are prepared fresh each day.
Tucked into 74 Webb Street in Te Aro, Wellington Central Early Learning Centre is a Barnardos early childhood centre serving families right in the heart of the city. For parents juggling city commutes and work hours, the centre's location and 7:00am to 6:00pm extended hours are designed to make daily drop-offs and pick-ups as easy as possible.
Centre Manager Dee and her team describe the centre as a bright, stimulating and safe environment where children can thrive. Despite being in the city centre, the centre has its own large ground-floor outdoor area complete with a vegetable garden, natural equipment and resources for tamariki to explore. Indoors, the space is purpose-built to be light and airy, designed to stimulate and develop children's natural curiosity.
The centre caters for tamariki aged 0 to 6 years, supporting the full early learning journey from infancy through to the transition to school.
Teaching at the centre is guided by Te Whāriki, New Zealand's early childhood curriculum. Kaiako work closely with each child, responding to their individual curiosities and creating an environment that reflects each child's needs. The centre also places a strong emphasis on community connection — from growing vegetables and herbs in the on-site garden to local excursions that link tamariki to the wider Te Aro community.
Communication with families is a core part of how the centre operates. Storypark, an online platform, is used to share photos, videos, audio and observations of each child's day, allowing whānau to stay connected and celebrate milestones in real time. Alongside this, the centre builds Tāku Pukapuka for each child — an individual, scrapbook-style learning portfolio filled with photos, artwork and stories that is gifted to the family as a keepsake once a child moves on from the centre.
Nutritious meals are prepared fresh each day, including breakfast, lunch, and morning and afternoon tea, so whānau don't need to worry about packing food for the day. Combined with the centre's extended opening hours, this is designed to take pressure off busy families.
Wellington Central Early Learning Centre is part of Barnardos Early Learning, which operates 21 early learning centres and around 120 Home Based Educators across Aotearoa. Barnardos Aotearoa was incorporated in 1969 and has been providing early learning services for more than 55 years, growing from its first centre in Māngere in 1972 into New Zealand's leading children's charity, working with over 30,000 tamariki and whānau each year.
