About True North Movement Studio

True North Movement is a boutique Reformer and Mat Pilates studio in the heart of Wānaka, designed to help members move well, build strength and create a consistent movement routine. Inspired by the mountains and active lifestyle of the area, the studio was created as a space where movement supports everything from long days on the mountain to everyday life.

The studio is owned by Maxi, whose background in over a decade of competitive gymnastics — both competing and coaching — shapes her strong focus on control and quality as a qualified Pilates instructor. She built True North to be a welcoming, community-driven space, with flexible membership options and virtual classes designed to fit into busy lives.

The wider teaching team includes Hannah, a registered nurse and recently qualified mat and reformer instructor blending classical Pilates with modern strength and functional movement; McKayler, who also works as a lawyer and focuses on building community within her classes; Aimee, originally from Australia and trained in Brisbane, known for a high-energy, hands-on approach; and Chelsea, who came to Pilates through a background in dance and now combines her two passions of Pilates and skiing to help clients build strength for the snow.

True North Movement: Reformer and Mat Pilates in the Heart of Wānaka

Set in Three Parks in the heart of Wānaka, True North Movement is a boutique Pilates studio built around a simple idea: movement should act like an internal compass, guiding balance, strength and a consistent routine that supports everything you do outside the studio too. Inspired by the mountains and active lifestyle that define Wānaka life, the space is designed to support everything from long days on the mountain to everyday movement.

Reformer, Mat and Virtual Options

At the centre of the studio's offering are small group, instructor-led reformer classes, capped at a maximum of eight reformers so instructors can genuinely guide, support and modify for each person in the room. Classes focus on full-body strength, core stability and controlled movement, built to be adaptable whether you're brand new to reformer Pilates or already experienced and looking to be challenged. For those wanting flexibility, the studio has introduced KioskPro by Your Reformer — a self-guided reformer experience delivered through in-studio touchscreens loaded with a curated library of classes, letting members choose their own class, pace and style (just bring your own Bluetooth headphones).

Alongside reformer work, the studio runs Mat Pilates classes — a dynamic, 45-minute full-body session built around creative, flowing sequences that challenge the whole body while building stability, balance and control. After any class, members can make use of the studio's dedicated recovery and stretching area, free to use and equipped with foam rollers and massage guns to help release tension and support muscle recovery.

A Team Shaped by Their Own Movement Backgrounds

Owner Maxi brings a decade of competitive gymnastics experience, both as an athlete and a coach, into her teaching — a background that shows up in her strong, controlled, full-body classes blending traditional and more dynamic Pilates styles. She's joined by a team with genuinely varied backgrounds: Hannah, a registered nurse who blends classical Pilates precision with modern strength and functional movement; McKayler, who works as a lawyer alongside teaching and focuses on building real community within her classes; Aimee, trained in Brisbane, who brings a high-energy, hands-on approach with plenty of music; and Chelsea, who came to Pilates through dance and now combines her love of Pilates with skiing, helping clients build the strength and body awareness needed to keep up in the snow.

With memberships starting from $22 a week and an introductory offer of four instructor-led classes with a two-week expiry, True North Movement makes it straightforward for newcomers to find their own way into a regular Pilates routine in Wānaka.
