Silverstream Early Learning Centre by Busy Bees is a nature-based early childhood education centre in Heretaunga, Upper Hutt. The centre takes a holistic approach to learning, with children treated as co-constructors of their own learning journey and every child's programme tailored to their individual learner identity.
The centre has two age-appropriate rooms, each with its own outdoor area. The Ruru Room cares for children up to two years old, with kaiako who specialise in working from infant cues and building a nurturing, secure space for the youngest tamariki. The Kiwi Room supports children aged two to five, offering an emergent, discovery-based curriculum where tamariki contribute ideas, make decisions and build responsibility for themselves, others and their environment.
Food is a big part of the day here. A dedicated Centre Chef prepares morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea daily, following dietitian-approved Nourish menus designed around the New Zealand Food and Nutrition Guidelines and Ministry of Health guidance for babies, toddlers and children. On Wednesdays, the four-year-olds bring a lunch box as part of their transition-to-school routine, building independence ahead of starting school. Teachers also run regular baking sessions with the children, and the centre has its own vegetable gardens and fruit trees so tamariki can learn hands-on where food comes from.
Learning is guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa's early childhood curriculum, and competencies drawn from Tātaiako, delivered through the centre's Bee Curious curriculum framework. Families stay connected to their child's progress through Storypark and individual portfolios. The centre offers 20 Hours ECE and welcomes families to call or visit anytime.

The centre is split into two age-appropriate rooms, each opening onto its own outdoor space. The Ruru Room looks after children up to two years old. The team here are specialist infant kaiako who work from a baby's own cues, building trust and security before anything else. There's a dedicated outside area just for the youngest tamariki, so they can explore safely and at their own pace.
Once children move into the Kiwi Room, from two to five years, the curriculum shifts to something more emergent and discovery-based. Kaiako observe and talk with tamariki to build projects around what actually interests them, while encouraging children to contribute ideas, make decisions, and take on responsibility for themselves, each other and their environment. Reading and writing materials are available throughout, but the focus stays on curiosity-led exploration.
