The business was originally founded by Tristan Thomas, who also founded Wheelworks Handcrafted Wheels, and Cameron Wood, whose interest in carbon fibre grew out of studying Chemistry and Applied Physics.

Carbon forks are one example: a fork failure can be catastrophic, and since replacement carbon forks aren't overly expensive, repairing one usually isn't better value than replacing it outright. Forks also carry complex, highly varied loading while riding, which makes repair less reliable than it is for a frame. Carbon rims and wheels are treated the same way. Damage here typically comes from either heat, whether from rim brakes or exhaust exposure, which damages the resin, or impact, which tends to affect a large section of the rim at once. In both cases, Alpha Carbon has decided it's neither economical nor logical to attempt a repair.

Ross's path into carbon fibre repair is an unusual one: a cyclist since the 1980s, when steel frames and 12-speed gearing were the norm, he brings an engineering background and training as a qualified dental technician to the work, alongside decades of hands-on composite material experience gained through his hobby of radio control aircraft, starting with racing propellers and progressing through wing spars for competition gliders and large-scale aerobatic aircraft. That combination of cycling passion, technical knowledge of load and stress in composite materials, and hands-on precision now underpins every repair.
The business itself was founded by Tristan Thomas and Cameron Wood. Tristan went on to found Wheelworks Handcrafted Wheels, growing it into New Zealand's premier wheelbuilding specialist, delivering custom wheelsets to customers across the country, Australia, and Singapore.
