Argos Gymnastic Club (Inc) is Tauranga's home of gymnastics, formed in 1991 from the amalgamation of four local clubs — Tauranga, Otumoetai, Te Puna and Mt Maunganui — and based on Koromiko St in Judea since 1998. It is the only fully set-up gymnastics centre in the city and is affiliated with GymnasticsNZ, the sport's national body, with enrolments now exceeding 700 gymnasts.
The programme covers every age and stage: pre-school classes from age two, junior recreational gymnastics for ages five and up, EXCEL, teen and adult classes, trampoline and tumbling, Go Ninja, parkour and competitive squads for girls and boys. The club caters for everyone from two-year-olds to seventy-year-olds, and its vision is an inclusive community where everyone can reach their potential through gymnastics. A dedicated S.N.A.P (Special Needs Adapted Program) and partnerships with local organisations support neurodiverse, blind low vision, hearing impaired and physically disabled gymnasts.
Beyond weekly classes, Argos hosts the Schools Gymnastics Festival, AIMS Games and GFA in the Bay competitions, runs school holiday programmes and gymnastics birthday parties, and offers private recreational lessons with accredited coaches.
Ask anyone in Tauranga where their kids learned to cartwheel and chances are the answer is Argos. Argos Gymnastic Club (Inc) has been part of Bay of Plenty life since 1991, when four local gymnastics clubs — Tauranga, Otumoetai, Te Puna and Mt Maunganui — came together as one. From the start, the new club's mission was to build fundamentals, fun, fitness and friendship, and to help develop the whole person through the basic skills of life. More than thirty years on, that spirit still shapes everything that happens on the mats at 34 Koromiko St in Judea.
The name ARGOS stands for Artistic, Rhythmic, General Organisation of Sports — though it is also a nod to two Greek heroes: one a warrior embodying strength and power (the gymnast), the other a figure with a hundred eyes (the coach, naturally). In November 1998 the club moved into the Koromiko St building it still calls home, and today it is the only fully set-up gymnastics centre in Tauranga, affiliated with GymnasticsNZ. Enrolments now exceed 700 gymnasts.
Argos says it loves all things gymnastics, and the programme list backs that up. There are pre-school classes for the club's youngest members, junior recreational gymnastics for ages five and up, EXCEL, teen classes, adult classes, trampoline and tumbling, Go Ninja, parkour and competitive groups for both girls and boys. The club caters for everyone from two-year-olds to seventy-year-olds — as they put it, there is a class for everyone.
Why gymnastics? The club points out that the sport improves coordination — accuracy, speed and smoothness between muscle groups — which carries over into balance and posture, whether you are on a beam, sitting at a school desk, or simply walking upstairs. And for those who prefer freestyling to formal routines, Go Ninja and parkour deliver, while trampoline and tumbling offer aerial and spatial freedom.
Inclusion sits at the heart of the club's vision: creating an inclusive community where everyone can reach their potential through gymnastics. The S.N.A.P (Special Needs Adapted Program) sits alongside partnerships with the Child Development Service, Homeschool Bay of Plenty, Tauranga Special School and BLENNZ, enabling coaches to work with gymnasts who are neurodiverse, blind low vision, hearing impaired, and physically disabled. The club values — gymnastics for all, teamwork, fun and excellence — show up in member feedback too, with families praising the patience and warmth of the coaching team.
Argos is also a centre of the region's competitive scene, hosting the Schools Gymnastics Festival, AIMS Games and GFA in the Bay competitions, along with its own recreational competition — next up on 30 August 2026. Head coaches administer the programmes, while junior coaches continue their development through xtnd courses. For gymnasts chasing a particular skill, private recreational lessons with accredited coaches are available — one-off or regular, 30 or 60 minutes — booked through the office or by email.
Classes follow the school year across four terms; in 2026 these run February 2 – April 2, April 20 – July 4, July 20 – September 26, and October 12 – December 19, with the club closed on public holidays and ARGOS event days. Beyond weekly classes there are school holiday programmes and gymnastics birthday parties to book. One practical note for families: Plunket vouchers are no longer accepted at Argos, though they can still be used at Te Puke Gymsports.
