About Two Mile Bay Sailing Club

The Two Mile Bay Sailing Club is Taupō's lakefront local, a relaxed family-owned spot to eat, drink and unwind right on the water. Established in 1989 by Anthony (Tony) and Alexandra Landl, the business began as a sail boat hire operation running out of a small shed, with a handful of yachts and Hobie Cats.

Over the decades it has grown into a full hospitality venue, serving signature wood-fired pizzas, Havana Coffee, cold Peroni on tap, and a full range of easy food and drinks for every kind of day by the lake. The site sits on land returned to Ngāti Tūwharetoa in 2016, with the Landl family holding a long-term lease and relationship with the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board. Now run by second-generation owners Torben and Jan Landl, the club hosts live music, big groups and family celebrations, and has expanded into community events including sponsoring the Taupō Half Marathon and launching the Pillar to Pou endurance event and the Taupō Golf Invitational.

Two Mile Bay Sailing Club: Taupō's Family-Owned Lakefront Local

The Two Mile Bay Sailing Club is Taupō's lakefront local, a relaxed spot to eat, drink and unwind right on the water, with a story going back to 1989.

From Sail Boat Hire to Local Institution

The club was established in 1989 by Anthony (Tony) and Alexandra Landl, initially operating as a sail boat hire business with a few yachts and a couple of Hobie Cats, running out of a small shed on site. In 2000, Tony expanded the site, built the backbone of what remains the main structure today, and diversified into hospitality by securing the business's first liquor license — initially limited to serving alcohol between 12pm and 2pm during summer, later extended to 8am–6pm year-round.

A Family Business Passed Down

Tony's sons, Torben and Jan, grew up around the business, even being paid in their younger years to sail yachts out and draw attention to the club. In 2009, the brothers took over running the business, with their first priority being to install the bar that still stands today. By 2012, licensed hours had extended to 10am–10pm, seven days a week — as it remains now — and the first wood-fired pizza ovens were installed, expanding the menu significantly.

A Long-Term Relationship with Ngāti Tūwharetoa

In 2016, the land on which the Two Mile Bay Sailing Club sits was rightfully returned to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and a long-term lease was put in place with the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board. The Landl family has maintained a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Ngāti Tūwharetoa ever since.

A New Generation Takes the Helm

In 2017, Torben and Jan formally purchased the Two Mile Bay Sailing Club from Tony, continuing the family's succession plan. Since then, they've breathed new life into the site — landscaping the outdoor areas, adding carpeting and new sails to keep the interior weather-tight and warm year-round, installing larger pizza ovens, and adding four new toilets.

Food, Drink and the Lake

Today, the club serves signature wood-fired pizzas, brunch, toasties, and a full drinks list spanning beer, wine, cocktails and Havana Coffee. Whether it's a morning coffee, an easy lunch, an afternoon drink in the sun, or live music as the day winds down, there's a reason to stop by — big groups, small catch-ups, families, celebrations or spontaneous visits are all welcome.

Part of the Wider Taupō Community

In 2023, Two Mile Bay Sailing Club became the official naming rights sponsor of the Taupō Half Marathon, held each August. More recently, the business has expanded into experience-led events, launching Pillar to Pou, an endurance event on the Taupō lakefront, and the Taupō Golf Invitational — further strengthening its ties to the local community and events calendar.
