The Selwyn Aquatic Centre on Broadlands Drive in Prebbleton is the Selwyn District's all-in-one swimming destination, operated by the Selwyn District Council. Under one roof sit five heated pools, each set to a different temperature for a different kind of swimmer — from lap swimmers and hydrotherapy regulars to toddlers on their very first visit.
The 25-metre main pool anchors the centre with ten lanes, depths of 1.4m to 2m and ramp access, held at 27.5 degrees for training and lap swimming. Warmer options surround it: a 20-metre programmes pool at 31 degrees for classes and activities, a 35-degree hydrotherapy pool with an attached 36-degree spa and its own ramp, a shallow 32-degree learn-to-swim pool, and a 32-degree leisure pool complete with a lazy river and toddlers area.
Beyond casual swimming, the centre is home to the Selwyn Swim School, aqua fitness classes, bookable birthday parties, and a monthly Women and Girls Pool Session on Saturday evenings. Memberships, concession cards and class bookings run through the Selwyn Recreation Portal, and lane availability for the main, programmes and hydrotherapy pools is published so swimmers can plan around busy sessions. The centre follows the Pool Alone policy from Water Safety NZ and the NZ Recreation Association, so check supervision requirements before arriving with children. On Broadlands Drive in Prebbleton, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre is the district's all-in-one swimming destination. Operated by the Selwyn District Council, the centre gathers five heated pools under a single roof and caters to just about every kind of swimmer: lap swimmers chasing a training set, hydrotherapy regulars easing sore joints, preschoolers taking their first lessons, and families after an easy few hours with the kids.
What makes the place work is its range. A serious ten-lane competition pool sits a short walk from a lazy river, and a 35-degree hydrotherapy pool shares the building with a birthday-party programme. Whatever brought you through the door, there is very likely a pool set to the right temperature for it.
The main pool is the centre's workhorse: 25 metres long with ten lanes, depths from 1.4m to 2m, and ramp access so swimmers can enter the water easily rather than by ladder. At 27.5 degrees it is kept brisk — exactly what lap swimmers and squad training prefer.
For gentler water, the 20-metre programmes pool runs at 31 degrees, with ten lanes and depths of 0.9m to 1.6m, and hosts much of the centre's class and activity programme. The hydrotherapy pool goes warmer still: 35 degrees in the pool itself, 36 in the attached spa, with depths of 1.2m to 1.8m and its own ramp access.
Families have the run of the leisure pool, heated to 32 degrees and home to a lazy river with a toddlers area attached. Beside it, the learn-to-swim pool is also held at 32 degrees, but with a shallow 0.65m to 0.90m depth that lets young children stand comfortably while they find their feet in the water.
The Selwyn Swim School runs lessons at the centre, with instructors teaching everyone from preschool-age children upward. For adults, aqua fitness classes turn the pool into a low-impact workout — plenty of resistance, none of the pounding.
Once a month on a Saturday, the centre hosts Women and Girls Pool Sessions from 5.30pm to 8pm, with the pool space reserved for women and girls from 4.30pm. If you are not staying for the session, staff kindly ask that other swimmers exit the pool space by 5pm those evenings.
Admissions, memberships and concession cards are handled through the Selwyn Recreation Portal, where you can set up an account, purchase a concession or membership, and book into classes and activities. Birthday parties at the pools can be arranged through a dedicated booking form, and the centre also manages bookings for the Southbridge and Darfield pools.
One habit worth picking up: lane availability shifts as bookings, lessons and classes come and go, and the centre publishes current availability for the main, programmes and hydrotherapy pools. A quick check before you leave home saves arriving to find your usual lane occupied by a squad.
The centre follows the Pool Alone policy based on Water Safety NZ and NZ Recreation Association guidelines. Children under five must have a swimming adult with them and stay within arm's reach at all times, at a ratio of one adult to two under-fives. Children under eight are not permitted in any pools unless actively supervised by a caregiver over 16 — watching at all times and close enough to give immediate help. One caregiver can be responsible for one child under five plus two children aged five to eight.
Enquiries go through the centre on (03) 347 2734 or [email protected], and its Facebook page carries updates. Between the five pools and their spread of temperatures, most visits end the same way: with a corner of the building set up for exactly the swim you had in mind.
