Bakers Lane is a small, from-scratch bakery in Queenstown Central, Frankton, where everything in the cabinet — fresh buns, cookies, cabinet bakes, celebration cakes and catering boxes — is made in the bakery's own kitchen. Opened in April 2023, it invites you to order online for pickup or pop in and see what's fresh from the oven.
The bakery is the work of Wendy, who grew up in Perth, Scotland, spent more than twenty years in engineering consultancy specialising in transport modelling, traffic engineering and road safety, and settled in Queenstown in 2007. Baking was the passion she kept coming back to, and in 2023 she took the leap and opened her first business. She remains genuinely grateful for the kind words of every customer and welcomes feedback as she grows.
Scrolls are what many come for: classic Cinnamon Scrolls, Baby Cinnamon Scrolls for sharing, an Almond Croissant Scroll and a Biscoff version, plus boxes of Portuguese Egg Tarts. Alongside the daily bakes you'll find the signature celebration cakes and the sweet and savoury catering boxes the bakery is well known for around Queenstown.
There are plenty of places to pick up something sweet in Queenstown, but few with a story quite like Bakers Lane. This small, from-scratch bakery in Queenstown Central has been welcoming locals and visitors since April 2023 with a cabinet of fresh buns, cookies, scrolls, Portuguese egg tarts and celebration cakes — all made in its own kitchen — plus the sweet and savoury catering boxes it has become well known for. You can order online for pickup, or simply pop in and see what's fresh from the oven.
Bakers Lane is the work of Wendy, the one behind the bakery. Her route here was anything but typical. Originally from Perth in Scotland, she spent more than twenty years in the engineering consultancy world, specialising in transport modelling, traffic engineering and road safety — work that took her all over the world and brought her to New Zealand in 2003. She settled in Queenstown in 2007.
As much as she enjoyed the job, Wendy says she thinks about food all the time. She loved baking, loved making things look pretty, and felt she was craving creativity in her career. So she took what she calls a massive leap and opened Bakers Lane in April 2023 — her first ever business. She admits she had no idea what to expect when the doors opened, and she remains genuinely appreciative of the kind words of support from everyone who has stepped inside. She is still learning about her business, still welcomes feedback, and credits her amazing family and friends for helping make it happen.
Scrolls are the headline act. The classic Cinnamon Scroll leads the lineup, joined by Baby Cinnamon Scrolls for sharing, an Almond Croissant Scroll and Biscoff Scrolls for something a little different. Alongside them sits the Box of Portuguese Egg Tarts — a box of golden custard tarts made for sharing, whether that's with the office or the family.
Beyond the everyday cabinet, Bakers Lane bakes its signature celebration cakes, made fresh and finished with the same love of making things look pretty that Wendy talks about. Catering is another point of pride: the bakery is well known around Queenstown for its sweet and savoury catering boxes, a handy answer for meetings, milestones and events. And whether it's a bun, a cookie, a cake or a catering box, everything comes out of the same from-scratch kitchen.
You'll find the bakery at B04/19 Grant Road in Queenstown Central, Frankton. It opens at 8:00am every day of the week, closing at 4:30pm on Monday, Tuesday and Sunday and at 5:00pm from Wednesday to Saturday. If there's something specific you're after — a scroll, a tart box, a cake — ordering online for pickup is the safest bet; otherwise walk in and browse whatever is fresh from the oven. Online orders can be paid with Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit card, PayPal, Shop Pay and Union Pay.
Questions, cake briefs and catering enquiries go to [email protected] or through the contact form on the website, and you can keep up with new bakes on Facebook and Instagram.
Part of Bakers Lane's appeal is that it's a genuine leap of faith turned local bakery. It's small and personal, run by someone who swapped a twenty-year career for early mornings and full cabinets, and who still thanks her customers for every bit of encouragement. Whether you want a single scroll, a box of egg tarts, a celebration cake or catering for a crowd, the baking speaks for itself — and the welcome comes straight from the person behind it all.
