R.S Lane's roots go back even further than its official founding. In 1955, Bob Lane started out as an apprentice at a local panelbeater. By 1962, he had worked his way up to partner and took over the business, renaming it R.S Lane Panel & Paint — a name he ran for 61 years before retiring in 2016. Today, the business is owned by Mike Bradley, who joined the panel shop in 2009 and took over from Bob when he retired. Notably, the sites that now house R.S Lane's Petone operations have their own history too: the Structural Repair site was once a tyre storage facility in the 1950s, while the Rapid Repair Centre across the road was built and used by Peter Baker Transport in the 1980s.
R.S Lane now operates from four locations: Petone in Lower Hutt, Kenepuru in Porirua (opened 15 February 2021), Te Aro in Wellington City, and Tawa. This spread lets the business serve customers across the wider Wellington region without a long trip to a single site.
