Duncan's Brewing Co. is an independently owned and operated micro-brewery established in 2014 on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand, pouring what the team calls New Zealand's most awarded and adventurous sour beers. The stated mission is simple: brew the biggest, boldest and most dessert-worthy brews — fruit-forward flavour bombs and pastry-inspired creations that deliver on the promise of 'not your normal beer.'
At the brewery tap room at 4B Sheffield Street in Paraparaumu you'll find twelve beers on tap plus tasting flights, cider and wine options, a small food menu, and pizza you can order in from local mates Passo. The space is family and dog friendly, no bookings are taken, and takeaway tap beer is available if you bring your own reusable bottle — glass flagons can be purchased on site. Happy Hour runs every Thursday 4-6pm and Sunday 1-3pm, with select pints and glasses of wine at $10.
Beyond the bar, Duncan's beers — from the Raspberry Waffle pastry sour to the Pawpaw After Party smoothie sour — are sold in 440ml four-packs through the online shop, which ships NZ-wide with free shipping on orders of $100 and over, alongside merch and gift cards. Distribution reaches Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and China.
On a quiet street in Paraparaumu, a short hop from the Kapiti Coast's famous beaches, Duncan's Brewing Co. has spent the past decade convincing New Zealand that beer doesn't have to play it safe. Established in 2014 and still independently owned and operated, this micro-brewery has built its reputation on sour beer — the style many breweries tiptoe around — and now pours what the team describes as New Zealand's most awarded and adventurous sours.
The brewery's slogan says it plainly: not your normal beer. Duncan's has built everything around a single mission — brewing the biggest, boldest and most dessert-worthy brews it can, from fruit-forward flavour bombs to pastry-inspired creations. It's beer for wine drinkers, beer for cocktail drinkers, beer for dessert lovers and, above all, beer for people who thought they didn't like beer.
The current range shows exactly what that means. Raspberry Waffle is a 6% pastry sour packed with tart raspberries, drizzled in rich maple goodness and finished with a smooth hit of vanilla — the team calls it breakfast in a can. San Isidore, brewed with the spicy sidekicks at Apostle, takes inspiration from Saint Isidore himself: passionfruit and pineapple bring the tropical party, fermented habanero throws the heat, and a hint of mint keeps things fresh over a smooth corn and barley base. Pawpaw After Party is a mega-fruited smoothie sour, loaded with pawpaw, mango and banana added both before and after fermentation for something thick, juicy and balanced between sweet and tangy.
All three come in 440ml cans sold as four-packs through the online shop, which ships NZ-wide — enter FREESHIPPING at checkout for orders of $100 and over. The shop also stocks merch and gift cards, and the reach keeps growing: look out for Duncan's in Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and China.
Cans are only half the story. At the brewery tap room on Sheffield Street, twelve beers flow on tap at any given time, alongside tasting flights for the indecisive and cider and wine options for anyone after something different. There's a small food menu at the bar, and you're actively encouraged to order in pizza from the brewery's local mates at Passo — sour beer and hot pizza is a combination that sells itself.
The room is deliberately relaxed. It's family and doggo friendly, bookings aren't taken, and the team would rather you just roll in as you are. Happy Hour runs every Thursday from 4 to 6pm and Sunday from 1 to 3pm, when select pints and glasses of wine drop to $10. Taking beer home? Bring your own reusable bottle for takeaway tap pours — and if you forget, glass flagons are available to purchase on the spot.
The tap room also doubles as the stage for the brewery's events, from release parties celebrating new sour cores — think tunes and kai from a visiting food truck — through to Duncan's own Block Party tradition. Subscribers to the mailing list hear about new seasonal beers, events and special discounts first.
Duncan's is a small, hands-on crew. Head brewer and brewery manager George Duncan leads production, with Evan Curry as lead brewer supported by assistants Llew Bardecki and Ziggy Mountier-Petzold. Waimatao Familton runs operations and marketing, Fleur Horstmann Bliss manages the tasting room, and Compy keeps the deliveries moving. The hypnotic, dreamlike artwork on the cans comes from illustrator Dr. D Foothead, a self-described hypnotic artist, dreamer and traveller.
Whether you're a dedicated sour hunter making the pilgrimage to the Kapiti Coast, a Paraparaumu local after a lazy Sunday session, or a self-confessed beer sceptic curious what all the fuss is about, the welcome is the same. As the brewery itself puts it: life's too short for boring beer.
