About Brew Union Brewing Co

Brew Union Brewing Co is a craft brewery, bar and restaurant on Broadway Avenue in the heart of Palmerston North. Back in 2017, mates Murray and Jules were inspired by the breweries, bars and brewpub scene of the Pacific Northwest — and that dream has since become a full-fledged Palmy institution built on good vibes and sustainability.

Everything starts with the beer. The award-winning house creations are brewed onsite, right in the centre of the Manawatu, with a focus on fresh and local, and they're poured alongside a rotating selection of guest craft beers from independent makers across New Zealand. The kitchen matches it with a locally inspired menu drawing on Kiwi, Asian and American cooking — wood-fired pizzas made from cold-fermented, hand-stretched dough, small plates and sharing boards, burgers, large plates and desserts, plus a Half-pints menu for kids twelve and under.

Open for dinner every night of the week and from midday Friday through Sunday, Brew Union also runs a sell-out monthly Gin Night, functions and set menus for larger groups, and offsite catering with tap beers and a gin bar. Pull up a stool, grab a menu and raise a glass — good times are like their beer, always flowing.

Brew Union Brewing Co: Craft Beer, Wood-Fired Pizza and Brewpub Vibes in Palmerston North

Back in 2017, mates Murray and Jules were inspired by the breweries, bars and brewpub scene of the Pacific Northwest — and came home with a plan. That plan grew into Brew Union Brewing Co, a craft brewery, bar and restaurant on Broadway Avenue that has become a full-fledged Palmy institution. The name is the mission statement: brew, the making of beer; union, the joining together of people with kindred interests.

The heart of it all is the brewery. Every beer in the house range is brewed onsite, right in the centre of the Manawatu, with a focus on fresh and local — and the creations have picked up awards along the way. Around the house taps flows a rotating selection of guest craft beers from independent makers across New Zealand, so the tap list doubles as a rolling tour of the national craft scene. The pairing matters as much as the pour: the locally inspired menu is designed to match the brews, from pizzas and sharing plates through to three-course dining.

From the wood-fired oven

Pizza is the headline act in the kitchen. The bases are cold-fermented, handmade onsite, hand-stretched and cooked in the wood-fired oven for a smoky, crispy crust. The Margherita keeps it classic with Napoli sauce, mozzarella, buffalo mozzarella and basil-infused extra virgin olive oil, while The Reuben stacks garlic-and-herb butter, mozzarella, smoked cheddar, pastrami, ham, dill pickles, sauerkraut and mustard mayo. The Gladiator layers Cajun spiced chicken and streaky bacon over cos lettuce and Caesar dressing, the Buffalo Chicken brings buffalo sauce and ranch, and the Godfather pairs chorizo, kalamata olives and sundried tomatoes with whipped feta. Mushroom lovers get the Fungi, built on ricotta, parmesan and confit mushrooms. A gluten-free base and a vegan cheese substitute are available, though trace amounts of flour may be present, so they aren't suitable for coeliacs.

A menu for every appetite

The kitchen cooks with Kiwi, Asian and American inspiration, and the all-day menu runs from light bites to three-course dining. Small plates cover bruschetta, fried pickles, charred edamame and salt & pepper calamari with passionfruit Naam jiim, while the Brewers Board gathers buttermilk fried chicken, calamari, fried cauliflower, fried pickles, jalapeno bites and Korean BBQ pork belly bites into one spread sized for four to six. Burgers span the smash burger — available double or triple — to a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with hot honey and a grilled haloumi burger. Larger plates include cola braised beef cheek with beer battered onion rings, 300gm pork belly with apricot jam, prosciutto-rolled chicken roulade and garlic & mint marinated lamb rump. Dessert means mango cheesecake, dark chocolate tart, berry sorbet or an ice cream sundae, and the Half-pints menu covers kids twelve and under.

More than a pub

There's a full events calendar, headlined by the sell-out monthly Gin Night — a stunning tasting experience featuring distillers from across the country. The team also hosts special occasions, from casual leaner-style gatherings of eight or more to sit-down meals, with set menus for groups over twenty offering two- or three-course formats and the ability to pre-order. Group bookings require a deposit, and offsite catering can bring tap beers, a gin bar and food to you. Sustainability sits alongside good vibes as a founding value of the whole operation.
