Paihia itself carries real history — the Church Missionary Society established a mission here in 1823, and New Zealand's first printing press was set up in the town in 1835. The mission closed in 1850, and by 1890 only a handful of houses and a church remained, before the holiday town as it's known today began to take shape from the 1930s onwards. One popular (if perhaps too tidy) story behind the town's name is that Rev. Henry Williams, taken with the tranquil bay, exclaimed "Pai here!" — meaning "good here" in a mix of Māori and English.
