Omaha Beach is a long sandy ocean beach on the Matakana coast in Rodney, north of Auckland, with a strong 4.7 Google rating. It sits at the end of a sand spit, a short drive from Matakana village.
At any open beach the tide shapes the day: high water shrinks the sand to a narrow strip, while mid to low tide leaves room to spread and gentler shallows for children. On a spit beach there are two very different waters — the ocean side for surf and bodysurfing, the harbour side for calm paddling when the wind gets up. Regulars go early to beat the afternoon sea breeze, swim between the flags when lifeguards are on duty over summer, and keep an eye out for rips. Shade is scarce on open sand, so a sunshade and water are worth packing.
With Matakana village and its weekend farmers' market just down the road, this is an easy half-day escape from Auckland.
