About Brick Eatery
Brick Eatery is a casual modern eatery in Monaco, Nelson, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from Wednesday through Sunday. The kitchen runs two breakfast menus — a fuller weekend list and a shorter midweek line-up — alongside an all-day menu of snacks and oysters, generous plates, sides and desserts.
Brunch highlights include the Brick Breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, mushroom and rosti, a cauliflower fritter with halloumi and jalapeno, and shakshuka baked with tomato, capsicum, onion and feta. Later in the day the menu shifts to oysters served natural, tempura or grilled, brisket croquettes, beef tartare, baked mussels with kimchi bacon butter, grilled half chicken and grass-fed sirloin, with creme caramel, broken banoffee or an affogato to finish. Coffee, teas, juices, a seasonal mocktail and a short bubbles-and-cocktails list — from a Bloody Mary to a Breakfast Martini — cover the drinks.
Tables can be reserved online in minutes, outdoor dining spaces are made available each day when the weather allows, and gift vouchers are on offer. Hours are Wednesday to Friday from 10am till 2.30pm and again from 4.30pm onwards, Saturday from 9am, and Sunday from 9am to 2pm.
Brick Eatery, Nelson: Casual Modern Breakfast, Oysters and Small Plates in Monaco
Brick Eatery sits on Quiet Woman Way in Monaco, Nelson, and keeps a schedule all of its own. Mondays and Tuesdays are dark; from Wednesday the doors open mid-morning and stay in service through Sunday, split between long lunches and evenings in the second half of the week. The register is casual modern — a room that works as easily for a plate of sirloin and a glass of champagne as it does for a flat white and a cheese scone on a Saturday morning.
Breakfast, weekend and midweek
Brunch is where the kitchen shows its range. On weekends the menu is at its fullest: the Brick Breakfast loads eggs, bacon, sausage, mushroom and rosti onto sourdough; a cauliflower fritter arrives with halloumi, jalapeno, tomato relish, rocket and parmesan; and stuffed French toast folds dulce de leche, blackcurrant, almond and mascarpone through brioche. There's eggs Benedict on an English muffin, a breakfast burger stacked with beef patty, fried egg, bacon and hash brown, and shakshuka baked with tomato, capsicum, onion and feta. Charred mushrooms come with rosti, avocado, poached eggs and dukkah, and slow-cooked brisket lands with swiss cheese, kraut, mustard mayo and a fried egg.
Midweek mornings run a shorter list — eggs on toast, the brisket and the shakshuka — with additions like potato rosti, streaky bacon and charred mushrooms if you want to build. Either way, the drinks list stretches well beyond coffee: flat whites and mochas, chai latte and hot chocolate, a shelf of teas, juices, a seasonal mocktail and Antipodes sparkling water, plus a bubbles-and-cocktails page with a Bloody Mary, a Mimosa, an Espresso Martini and a gin-and-marmalade Breakfast Martini. Cheese scones appear daily until they're gone.
From the raw bar to the grill
From late morning the all-day menu takes over, opening with snacks and oysters — natural with shallot vinegar, tempura with togarashi mayo, or grilled with scallion butter, grana padano and panko — alongside marinated olives, house-baked sourdough with olive oil and balsamic, pork puffs and brisket croquettes with pickle mayo.
Plates move from raw and bright to full-on comfort: white fish sashimi with wasabi and ponzu, beef tartare with cured yolk and peppered crisps, pork terrine with IPA mustard, baked mussels in kimchi bacon butter, crispy chicken wings, pork skewers with miso apple, and roast yams with hummus and pomegranate. The heartier end of the menu holds a butterflied gurnard with pea verde, grilled half chicken with mole and burnt leek salsa, a 300g pork loin chop with crackling and smoked mustard jus, and 250g of grass-fed sirloin in sichuan pepper sauce. Charred fennel with smoked tofu and red chimichurri anchors the vegetable side of the list, sides run to agria fries, garlic mash and crispy brussels sprouts, and dessert is a choice of English breakfast creme caramel, broken banoffee or an affogato with biscotti.
Booking in and eating outside
Tables can be reserved online in minutes, and the eatery keeps outdoor dining spaces that are made available each day when the weather allows. Booking ahead and set on eating alfresco? Leave a note in the reservation comments — outside-seating requests get first priority when the day allows it. Gift vouchers are available too, pitched at special occasions, fellow foodies, or a treat-yourself fund.
