About Winifreds
Winifred's is a cafe, restaurant and bar on West Quay in Ahuriri, Napier, living by its own motto: Sip. Bite. Smile. Repeat. It covers the whole day — brunches and coffees to start, long lunches through the middle, and dinner with signature cocktails once the evening rolls in. Breakfast runs all day, built around free-range eggs, big breakfast plates, corn fritters and house-made hollandaise, while lunch brings seafood chowder, calamari, tacos, burgers and house-made pizzas.
The kitchen has range. Morning favourites include the Winifred's Morning Feast, a Keto Big Breakfast and a smoked salmon bagel with lemon cream cheese; the dinner menu steps things up with pork spare ribs glazed in house-made whiskey and coke BBQ sauce, sous vide pork belly, slow-cooked lamb rump and a 250g chargrilled scotch fillet. Kids get their own meals, each served with a hot chocolate or juice, and dessert runs from espresso crème brûlée to a pecan brownie with vanilla ice cream and Oreo crumb.
The drinks list is just as considered: a full coffee menu, organic teas (including a wild-harvested manuka blend), smoothies, tap and bottled beers, a broad wine list, and a long line-up of signature cocktails from the Espresso Martini to the activated-charcoal Black Magic. Many dishes are marked gluten-free available — staff welcome questions about dietary needs, though the kitchen is not celiac-free. Winifred's opens Tuesday to Thursday from 10am, Friday and Saturday from 9am, and Sunday from 8am, with lunch service until 2:15pm and dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm to 8:30pm. Mondays are closed — even the pans need a rest. Reservations can be made through the website.
Winifred's Napier: All-Day Brunch, Long Lunches & Signature Cocktails in Ahuriri
Winifred's sits on West Quay in Ahuriri, Napier, and it runs on a cheerful philosophy: Sip. Bite. Smile. Repeat. It is equal parts cafe, restaurant and bar — the kind of place where the morning starts with flat whites and poached eggs, slides into long lunches, and ends with dinner and a signature cocktail once the evening settles in. As the team puts it: morning feasts, midday eats, long lunches and dinner — they've got you.
The week has an easy rhythm. Tuesday to Thursday, doors open at 10am; Friday and Saturday start earlier at 9am; and Sunday is the earliest of all, kicking off at 8am. Lunch service wraps up at 2:15pm each day, then — Tuesday through Saturday — the kitchen fires up again at 5pm for dinner until 8:30pm. Monday is the day even the pans get a rest. Reservations can be made through the website's booking page.
Breakfast Worth the Alarm — Or the Sleep-In
Breakfast is an all-day affair, and it leans hearty. Free-range eggs star throughout: cooked your way on sesame sourdough with house-made tomato chutney, perched on a crispy potato rosti under homemade hollandaise, or doubled up on the Corn Fritter Double Deck with avocado salsa and sour cream.
The bigger plates are built for proper appetites. Winifred's Morning Feast loads up poached eggs, streaky bacon, pork and fennel sausage, grilled tomato, balsamic portobello, sourdough, golden potato hash and hollandaise — with a choice of twists like grilled halloumi or smoked salmon. The Keto Big Breakfast goes gluten-free with halloumi and avocado, and the Guacamole Croissant stacks a flaky croissant with chunky guacamole, poached eggs and a roasted cashew and charred capsicum sauce. Sweet tooths are covered by pancakes or waffles with caramelised banana, mixed berry compote, honeycomb crumb and salted caramel, while the smoked salmon bagel handles the savoury-luxe end with lemon cream cheese, capers and pickled onion.
Midday Eats, Long Lunches and House-Made Pizza
From 11:30am the lunch menu takes over, and seafood has pride of place. Saffron seafood chowder arrives brimming with fresh seafood and grilled ciabatta; calamari comes crispy-fried with chipotle and confit garlic aioli or tossed salt-and-pepper style through a salad. Further down the list: soy-glazed pork belly tacos, an open-face steak sandwich with chargrilled rib eye, beer-battered fish and chips with house-made chunky tartar, and a fresh pasta linguine with bacon, sundried tomato and baby spinach.
Burgers all come with hot chips and tomato sauce — the 180g bacon and beef on a brioche bun is the heavyweight — and house-made pizzas run from artichoke and feta to The Meaty One and a smoked salmon number with capers and cream cheese. Kids get proper meals of their own, each served with a hot chocolate or juice. Save room for dessert: espresso crème brûlée, coconut and mango panna cotta, warm pecan brownie, or an affogato with your pick of liqueur.
Dinner on the Quay
From 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, dinner brings out the big plates. Starters range from pork bao buns with sweet chili and soy caramel to crumbed camembert with maple walnuts, prawn and pork dumplings in broth, and pan-seared scallops with chorizo crumb and apple salsa. Mains hold court: half a kilo of pork spare ribs glazed in house-made whiskey and coke BBQ sauce, sous vide pork belly over miso pumpkin puree, parmesan-crusted fish of the day with green pea risotto, a three-hour slow-cooked lamb rump with red wine braised mushroom ragout, and a 250g chargrilled scotch fillet with your choice of sauce.
The Glass Half Full
The drinks list is as considered as the kitchen. Coffee runs from flat whites to piccolos, alongside hot chocolate and sweet or spicy chai. Organic teas include a wild-harvested manuka blend, and smoothies cover the green, berry and tropical bases. Beer lovers get taps pouring everything from Guinness to Emerson's and Panhead, plus a bottled lineup; the wine list spans sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, rosé, pinot gris and reds from Church Road, Elephant in the Room, Man O' War and Amisfield. Then there are the signature cocktails — more than twenty of them, including the Espresso Martini, the activated-charcoal Black Magic, the Smokin' Godfather and a Tiramisu cocktail built on Nutella and Oreo crumb.
A few practical notes: many dishes are marked gluten-free available, and the team invites you to ask about any dietary requirement — though the kitchen is not celiac-free. Between the early Sunday seatings, the long weekend brunches and the after-five crowd, Winifred's manages to be a morning ritual, a lunch destination and an evening out all at once.
