Urban Soul Karaka: Café Mornings, Bistro Nights on Hingaia Road

Urban Soul Karaka sits on Hingaia Road, a couple of minutes off the Papakura exit, and has quietly become one of Auckland's favourite cafe stops — literally, in fact, with the venue flagged among Auckland's Best Cafes thanks to its quality food, great coffee and friendly customer service. It's the kind of place where locals roll in early for a flat white and come back that evening for a scotch fillet and a glass of wine.

Coffee is taken seriously here. The team pours Fair Trade coffee roasted by Ozone Coffee Roasters, alongside a drink list that stretches from turmeric lattes and house-made teas to smoothies, mocktails, cocktails and New Zealand wine. The kitchen's diverse menu celebrates local produce and homemade baking, and menus are refreshed regularly with seasonal changes.

One venue, two personalities

Mornings belong to the cafe. Breakfast runs from 7am (8am on weekends) until 2pm, covering everything from winter porridge and omelettes to the full Soul Breakfast — poached eggs, field mushrooms, pork sausages, bacon, hash cakes, avocado, halloumi and house-made relish. There's a Benedict built on herbed potato rosti, smashed avocado with dukkha, a keto-friendly Midnight Breakfast and Biscoff pancakes for the sweet-toothed.

From 11.30am the lunch menu takes over with nourish bowls, corn fritters, tempura fish & chips, sourdough toasties, buttermilk fried chicken burgers and a classic 200g sirloin. Free-range ingredients are flagged across the menu, and gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options appear throughout. The kitchen can't guarantee dishes are 100% allergen-free, but staff ask diners to flag allergies so they can do their utmost to avoid cross-contamination.

From Wednesday to Sunday, the bistro side opens at 3pm and runs late, bringing cocktails, mocktails, New Zealand wine and tap beer to the table — with a Happy Hour window to make the most of it.

Weeknights with something on

Urban Soul gives Karaka a reason to go out midweek. Wednesday is Date Night Steak Night, with scotch fillet served alongside a house wine or beer. Thursday brings the Believe It or Not Quiz Night from 7pm, Friday is burger night, and Happy Hour runs Wednesday to Sunday from 4pm to 5.30pm. The wine list covers Prosecco and Champagne for celebrations through to local sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay and pinot noir, while mocktails like the Virgin Mojo and Junior Mule keep non-drinkers in the game.

Families are well looked after. There's a dedicated kids menu running from breakfast through dinner — pancakes, mac n cheese, mini chicken burgers, even a design-your-own pizza from 4pm — and a playground in the courtyard keeps younger guests busy while the grown-ups finish their coffee.

The venue also hosts private functions and offers catering options, with enquiries handled by a dedicated functions email, and gift vouchers are available to buy online. Online ordering makes takeaway easy, and reservations can be made through the website — worth doing for weekend breakfasts and event nights.

Hours run Monday and Tuesday from 7am to 4pm, Wednesday to Friday from 7am until late, and from 8am until late on Saturdays and Sundays. The cafe opens on most public holidays, though hours vary, and it closes for Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Whether it's a weekday coffee run, a long weekend brunch with the kids or a midweek steak and quiz night, Urban Soul Karaka packs cafe, bistro and local-watering-hole energy into one handy Hingaia Road address.
