About Eutopia Cafe

Eutopia Cafe is a one-of-a-kind cafe and art space in Kaiwaka, a small town in Northland, New Zealand, set right on State Highway 1. It was handcrafted over five years by Marijke & Robert together with their sons and a little help from volunteers, with every piece lovingly restored and designed from a single vision. The result is a place that is hard to categorise and easy to love: a unique and magical space, made for everyone to enjoy.

Art is everywhere you look. The family celebrates Aotearoa's unique flora and fauna, as well as its mythology, throughout the cafe, and every small area is a handcrafted story waiting to be discovered. Even the cafe's own advice is to slow down, take a seat, and explore — because everywhere you go, there is something new to find.

And it is still very much a cafe. Start the day with a fresh cup of Eutopia's amazing coffee, take a look at the current menu on their website, and enjoy the lots of outdoor space on offer — which the owners note could make a great venue for an event or a music occasion. Press have taken notice too: Stuff called it 'World Famous in New Zealand: Kaiwaka's Eutopia Café, a fantastic work of art you shouldn't miss.'

Eutopia Cafe, Kaiwaka: Northland's Handcrafted Cafe & Art Space on State Highway 1

Most roadside stops promise a coffee and a bathroom. Eutopia Cafe in Kaiwaka promises a small, handcrafted universe. Sitting on State Highway 1 in the little Northland town of Kaiwaka, New Zealand, it is equal parts cafe and art space — and it has drawn national attention for it. Stuff's travel desk described it in January 2022 as 'World Famous in New Zealand: Kaiwaka's Eutopia Café, a fantastic work of art you shouldn't miss,' following earlier features in Organic NZ ('Beauty and the Feast', June 2021) and a 2019 piece titled 'Rewards of the Road'.

Kaiwaka itself is small — the cafe calls it simply 'a small town in Aotearoa (NZ)' — which makes what has been built here all the more surprising. Over the years the team has crafted what they describe as a unique and magical place, for everyone to enjoy.

A five-year labour of love

Eutopia is not a fit-out chosen from a catalogue. The cafe has been handcrafted by Marijke & Robert, along with their sons and a little help from volunteers. Each piece has been lovingly restored and designed from a single vision — a vision that took five years to complete. That patience shows.

Wander the space and you move from one small handcrafted area to the next, each one its own story to discover. Some are quirky, some delightful, and all of them reward a slower pace. The cafe's own advice is to 'slow down and take a seat', because everywhere you go there is something new to explore. It is a rare thing on a state highway: a stop that people plan a detour around rather than simply pull into.

Artwork that celebrates Aotearoa

Art is the second half of Eutopia's identity. Throughout the cafe, the family celebrates Aotearoa's unique flora and fauna, as well as its mythology — turning imagination into reality across the artworks and handmade details on show. Visitors are invited to simply take a look, and even a repeat visit tends to surface something missed the first time. If you would like a preview before you travel, the website offers a virtual tour and an online gallery so you can walk through the space and feel the vibe from home.

Coffee first

Of course, it is still a working cafe, and the coffee has a following of its own — the cafe's gallery describes a fresh cup of Eutopia's amazing coffee as a great way to start the day. The current menu is published as a download on the cafe's website (eutopia.nz/menu), so you can see what is on offer before you set out.

Room to roam — and room for events

One thing Eutopia has in abundance is outdoor space. Lots of it. On a fine Northland day you can take your coffee outside and linger among the handcrafted corners, and the owners point out that the grounds could make a great venue — a music event, perhaps. If you are planning something, the team welcomes a call or an email.
