Donegal House is an iconic Irish pub, restaurant and accommodation located at 258 Schoolhouse Road, Kaikōura Flat, a family run institution serving locals and visitors since 1997. The venue takes its name from County Donegal, Ireland, the birthplace of former owner Murray Boyd's great-grandfather Davy Boyd, who emigrated in 1861 and eventually settled in Kaikōura in 1896.
Under new ownership from July/August 2023, Kate Lawson and James Boyd have refurbished and revitalised the venue while keeping its warm, friendly Irish pub atmosphere. The restaurant serves traditional style meals with modern twists, made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients where possible, alongside a kids menu, and the bar stocks a wide selection of beers, wines and spirits from New Zealand and around the world, including Irish stout.

After prospecting for gold in Ballarat and Bendigo in Australia, and on New Zealand's western and southern goldfields at Gabriel's Gully in Central Otago, the Boyd brothers eventually settled in Kaikōura in 1896. Together they transformed what was then near-impenetrable swampland into productive farmland — land that remains, to this day, a working dairy farm milking 150 cows. That family history gives Donegal House a genuine connection to the area that goes well beyond its Irish pub theming.
From July and August 2023, Donegal House came under new ownership, with Kate Lawson and James Boyd taking over and setting about refurbishing and revitalising the venue. Their stated aim is to make sure everyone who visits feels welcome, valued, safe and respected, creating an inclusive environment where guests and staff alike can relax and enjoy themselves. The result is a venue that keeps its iconic status intact while bringing fresh energy to the kitchen, bar and accommodation.
The restaurant serves traditional style meals with modern twists, prepared by a team of experienced chefs who use fresh ingredients, sourced locally wherever possible. A kids menu is also available, making Donegal House a workable option for families as well as couples and groups.
