About Little Liberty Creamery

Little Liberty Creamery is a Dairy Free, plant-based ice cream scoop shop in Inglewood, Taranaki, founded in 2018 by Chester and Melissa. The business was born out of the search for a comforting, safe treat for families navigating allergies and dietary restrictions, and has grown into a beloved local scoop store.

In February 2022, Peita Kensington and her friend Rebecca Chubb purchased Little Liberty Creamery and reopened the scoop store in its original courtyard on Matai Street. Rebecca's daughter, who is Dairy Free, had long struggled to find suitable ice cream options, and Little Liberty had been a genuine game-changer for her family. In 2024, Rebecca sold her half of the business to focus on her nursing career, leaving Peita as sole owner. Today, Little Liberty continues to create inclusive Dairy Free ice cream using top quality ethical ingredients that support local producers and celebrate diversity and individuality.

Little Liberty Creamery: Dairy Free Ice Cream in Inglewood

Little Liberty Creamery in Inglewood, Taranaki, has built its story around a simple but powerful idea: that everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions, deserves a proper scoop of comfort.

Born Out of Necessity

Founded in 2018 by Chester and Melissa, Little Liberty Creamery was, in the founders' own words, "born out of necessity, an answer to the call for small scoop of comfort for a sleep deprived mother of a screaming refluxing new born." Like many parents, the founders found themselves navigating allergies and dietary restrictions that appeared unexpectedly in their family's life, and set out to create something that could genuinely help.

A Friendship That Changed the Business

The next chapter of Little Liberty's story began during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when Peita Kensington found herself reflecting on what mattered most while in London. Returning to her roots in New Zealand, she reconnected with her friend Rebecca, who introduced her to Little Liberty Creamery's Dairy Free, plant-based ice cream. Rebecca shared how her own daughter, who is Dairy Free, had always struggled to find suitable ice cream — until Little Liberty became a genuine game-changer for her family.

Taking Over the Business

When the original founders decided to sell, Rebecca proposed that she and Peita buy the business together. In February 2022, they took the leap, purchasing Little Liberty Creamery and reopening the beloved scoop store in its original courtyard location on Matai Street. Two years later, Rebecca made the decision to focus on her nursing career and sold her half of the business to Peita, who became sole owner.

Continuing the Mission

Today, Peita continues to champion the ethos established by the original founders — using top quality, ethical ingredients that support local producers, and celebrating diversity and individuality along the way. The business remains committed to working alongside and immersing itself in its local community, creating ice cream that brings joy to those with dietary restrictions and beyond.

More Than a Scoop Shop

Beyond the physical scoop shop, Little Liberty Creamery has grown to offer an online store, wholesale supply for stockists, fundraising programmes for local groups, and franchise opportunities for those wanting to bring the brand to new communities.

A Personal, Community-Focused Journey

Peita's journey with Little Liberty Creamery reflects the power of friendship, empathy, and the impact one person can have on a community — a story that continues to shape how the business operates today, with a strong focus on inclusivity and genuine care for customers navigating dietary restrictions.
