Originally founded in 2017 operating out of a vintage caravan traveling across North Island markets and music festivals, the business established its permanent home at the beginning of 2019 in a converted former welder's workshop.

The roots of Drifter Coffee trace back to 2017, when the operation was entirely mobile. Touring throughout the North Island in a retro caravan, the team served festival-goers and weekend market crowds at major events including SoundSplash and WOMAD. Traveling from gathering to gathering established the team's commitment to friendly service, great coffee, and approachable vibes.
At the start of 2019, an opportunity presented itself when a former welder's workshop became available on George Lowe Place. Taking on the overhaul themselves, the founders stripped away decades of industrial dust and grime, replacing steel fabrication tools with an espresso machine, house plants, and comfortable furnishings. The result is an oasis positioned right in the middle of local mechanics and directly across the road from beloved local op shops.
Drifter Coffee NZ centers on being more than just a quick takeaway stop. The venue regularly hosts community gatherings and club meetups, fostering a loyal local following among Orewa residents, tradespeople, and beachgoers heading past Hatfields Beach. In addition to daily coffee service, the business has expanded its offerings with the dedicated Drifter Bakery, crafting baked goods to pair with morning drinks.
