Behind the bar and in the kitchen it is a hands-on crew. Regulars will know Mel and Andy by name, and Malt — the Director of Dog Operations and chief taster, now happily retired — has long been part of the furniture. The team works to three guiding principles: create memorable experiences for guests, keep learning so they can inspire and be inspired, and have fun along the way. One long-time reviewer summed it up as 'the Holy Trinity of Food, Service and Value,' crediting Mel, Andy, Malt and the team with delivering all three for years and years.
The menu covers proper pub territory, and guests have their favourites. The cheesy garlic pizza bread gets name-checked in reviews as the thing you order — 'the food was spot on too, the cheesy garlic pizza bread especially,' wrote one April 2025 visitor. Beyond that there is a full food menu, a Sweet Treats dessert list, and a drinks selection spanning wine, beer and softs plus a dedicated cocktails and mocktails list — one guest credited the bar with making 'epic drinks' for the whole table.
And then there is the Guinness. One regular's verdict: 'Drop in for a feed, a warm welcome and give a crack to splitting the G on a strong contender for the best pint of Guinness in NZ.'
