Colors Hair Company — Colors Hair Co to locals — is a Hamilton Central hair salon on Liverpool Street built around one big idea: an amazing consultation is the key to the perfect result. Every visit starts with an interactive conversation about your face shape, skin tone and style personality, so the team can customise a look and plan especially for you — feminine to funky, elegant to edgy, simple to sensational.
The five-stylist team brings serious mileage. Founder Djuanne has 47 years in the industry and owned her first salon in Remuera at 25; Dean holds an international qualification recognising masterful colourists and specialises in creative colour, correction, balayage, fades and hair tattooing; Hemi and Leonie each bring 20 years of cutting and colouring experience; and Carla adds Melbourne training with a love of soft, natural-looking hair painting. The team also notes the salon has won Best Training Salon in NZ.
Colors specialises in corrective colouring and offers cuts and styling, blow waves, treatments, foils and a bleach retouch package, working with sustainable Italian brand Davines. True to its work/life balance ethos, the salon opens four days a week — Tuesday to Thursday until 8pm, Friday until 5pm — with Saturdays set aside for weddings and special occasions by appointment.
On Liverpool Street in Hamilton Central, Colors Hair Company — Colors Hair Co to its regulars — runs on a simple conviction: the perfect result starts long before anyone picks up a pair of scissors. The team believes an amazing consultation is the key to a look you'll love, so every visit begins with an interactive conversation about your face shape, your skin tone and your style personality. From that, they customise a look and a plan especially for you — feminine to funky, elegant to edgy, simple to sensational, as they put it.
That philosophy shapes everything. The stylists will talk to you about your face shape, use skin tone cards to work out whether you're warm, cool or neutral before colouring, and consider you from top to toe before suggesting a total look. All of it happens, they promise, in a fun, friendly, professional environment. The goal is simple: make you look and feel great, and exceed your expectations through a relaxing, enjoyable experience.
Colors runs on the experience of a five-strong stylist team, each with their own strengths — and the salon invites you to choose who would suit you.
At the helm is Djuanne, known to friends as DJ, who has spent 47 years in the industry. She owned her first salon at 25 in Remuera, has managed a beauty therapy business, worked as a seminar leader and served as Education Development Manager for an international brand. These days she spends most of her time on the floor with clients and the rest training staff. She's candid about why the salon opens only four days a week: after years with a big corporate, she wanted work/life balance for herself and her team, and hopes to show other businesses it can work.
Dean brings more than twenty years in hairdressing plus an international qualification recognising masterful colourists. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, he loves all aspects of the craft — creative colouring, colour correction, foiling, balayage and ombre — and is just as comfortable behind the clippers doing stylish fades and hair tattooing.
Hemi, a Hamilton local, spent two decades in Wellington and Auckland salons before returning home. He offers twenty years of cutting and colouring experience, from long styles to short, with full head foils and hand-painted balayage among his favourites.
Leonie is a fully qualified hairdresser with twenty years' experience who loves colouring, foiling and cutting — and calls Colors her happy place. She also notes the salon has won Best Training Salon in NZ, something the team is clearly proud of.
Carla completed her apprenticeship in Melbourne and has more than ten years' experience, with a passion for colour work and hair painting that creates soft, natural-looking results tailored to each client's face shape, lifestyle and routine.
Colour is a huge category at Colors — and a personal one. The menu covers half head and full head foils, retouch colour, hairline and T-bar work, and a bleach retouch package that includes toner and a treatment. What the salon is best known for, though, is corrective colouring: it's the specialty they advertise, with pricing quoted in consultation once the work involved has been assessed.
Cuts and styling are just as considered. Women's cut and style is available with a stylist or a master stylist, men's cuts are on the menu, and the blow wave options — plain, with irons, or with curls — cover everything from a smooth finish to evening-ready waves. In-salon treatments round things out.
Colors has partnered with Davines Sustainable Beauty as its product and business partner, using and recommending their colour, care and styling lines. Davines was born in Parma, northern Italy, in 1983, remains 100% family-owned by the Bollati family, and is a B Corp championing people, planet and community. Its products are developed and produced at Davines Village — with greenhouses, scientific botanical gardens and a 16-hectare regenerative organic farm — in a zero-waste, carbon-neutral, artisanal fashion. The team says clients couldn't be happier with the results.
Colors Hair Co is open Tuesday to Thursday from 9am to 8pm and Friday from 9am to 5pm. Saturdays are reserved for weddings and special occasions by appointment only, and the salon is closed Sunday and Monday — part of that deliberate work/life balance ethos. Booking is easy: call 07 838 1466 or use the online booking system.
If you're new to Colors, the invitation is simple: come in for a complimentary consultation and meet the team. With stylists who each bring something different — from masterful colour to precision fades to natural-looking hair painting — the hardest part might just be choosing who suits you best.
