About Brew West Coast
Monteith's Brewery on Herbert Street in Greymouth is the original home of craft brewing in New Zealand and a Qualmark Gold recognised visitor experience. Part working brewery, part restaurant and part museum, it pours award-winning beers and ciders alongside a locally inspired menu built on West Coast produce — gurnard caught in the Tasman Sea, venison and lamb from Hari Hari, black garlic from Blackball, milk from Your Farm and buns from Blanchfields bakery.
Visitors come for the Herbert Street Haul beer-battered gurnard, the Fiordland mini venison burgers, hearty mains and homemade desserts, and stay for the 45-minute Brewery Experience tour that runs daily at 4pm — complete with pouring your own beer, discounts on West Coast activities and a six-pack to take home. There is a free museum to wander and a shop stocked with all things Monteith's.
True to the West Coast way, the spirit of manaakitanga is strong here: guests are welcomed like long lost friends and stories are shared freely. The brewery is open seven days from 11am to 9pm, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
Monteith's Brewery, Greymouth: New Zealand's Original Home of Craft Brewing
Greymouth has been a brewing town for generations, and Monteith's Brewery on Herbert Street is where that story lives. Widely regarded as the original home of craft brewing in New Zealand, it is a working brewery that doubles as a restaurant, bar, museum and shop — and a Qualmark Gold recognised visitor experience, an acknowledgement of its hospitality, menu, prompt service and storytelling.
But awards only tell half the story. Here the spirit of manaakitanga is strong: guests are welcomed like long lost friends, stories and time are shared freely, and the team likes to think visitors take a little piece of the place and its spirit with them when they hit the road again. It is the West Coast way, and it shapes everything from the guided tours to the way plates arrive at the table.
A Menu Built on Local Produce
The kitchen takes pride in supporting its community, sourcing as many local products as it can. Blanchfields bakery bakes the burger buns; Blackball Black Garlic supplies its famous black garlic, which is also sold by the jar on the shelves; Thomsons Hari Hari Butchery provides the sausages, venison and lamb; milk comes from Your Farm; and the gurnard is caught in the Tasman Sea by West Fleet Seafoods. The team continually seeks ingredients that are ethically and fairly produced.
That sourcing shows across a menu running from easy eats and light plates to proper mains. The Herbert Street Haul — Golden Lager beer-battered gurnard with coleslaw, beer battered fries and tartare sauce — tastes like Greymouth on a plate, while prawn and ginger dumplings, spicy fish tacos, garlic prawns with mango and chilli salsa and Coast fried chicken cover the snacking.
Other favourites include the Fiordland mini venison burgers, Thai red beef curry, bangers and mash with black garlic, the Phoenix chicken and pulled pork burgers on Blanchfield's brioche, a pumpkin quinoa vegan burger, baked salmon fillet and a Moroccan slow-roasted lamb Sunday roast. Younger visitors get a kids' menu of their own, and homemade desserts — sticky date pudding, pumpkin spiced cake and an ice cream trio — finish things off. Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options are marked across the menu, and anyone with allergies or dietary requirements is asked to let the team know.
Tour, Taste and Take Some Home
The Brewery Experience is the heart of a visit. The guided 45-minute tour runs seven days a week at 4pm and unpacks the wonders of craft beer. Guests get to pour their own beer from the tap, receive discounts on great West Coast activities, and take home a six-pack of their favourites — all included in the tour price.
Prefer to stay at the bar? A tasting tray is the way to explore the range of award-winning beers and ciders at your own pace. Before or after eating, wander the free museum or browse the shop for all things Monteith's — from merchandise to jars of that Blackball black garlic.
