Shaka Bros is a burger bar and casual dining venue at 96 Oxford Terrace in Christchurch's Riverside Market, run by the team behind Bacon Brothers Events Ltd (established 2013). While it shares the same founding DNA as Bacon Brothers at Little High Eatery, Shaka Bros has its own identity — its own menu, its own craft beers, and its own spot on the Ōtākaro Avon River. The vibe is warm and unpretentious: come for great food, a hug, and a laugh or two.
All burgers come with Shaka Sauce. The menu covers beef, lamb, chicken, pork, vegan, brunch, and keto options, with an explicit note that all-day burgers are now available throughout trading hours. Gluten-free friendly options are available, though the kitchen contains gluten and 100% cross-contamination cannot be guaranteed.
The Bacon Bros stall also runs every weekend at the Christchurch Farmers Market at Riccarton Bush — the original point where the business started. Shaka Bros takes bookings and provides catering for events, functions, weddings, and parties.
Shaka Bros occupies a specific place in the Christchurch dining landscape: it's the second venue from the team behind Bacon Brothers, sharing the same founders and the same commitment to good food, but with a different menu, different craft beers, and a different location. Where Bacon Brothers sits inside Little High Eatery on St Asaph Street, Shaka Bros is at 96 Oxford Terrace in the Riverside Market — Christchurch's busy riverside food precinct on the Ōtākaro Avon River.
The invitation on the website is straightforward: come down, share some great food, a hug and a laugh or two. The menu backs that energy up.
All burgers at Shaka Bros come with Shaka Sauce, and the range is wide enough to reward repeat visits. The beef side of the menu includes everything from the entry-level **Ya Basic** ($14 — smashed Angus beef pattie, cheese, caramelised onion, pickles) through to the substantial **Dad Bod** ($24 — smashed Angus beef pattie, cheese, 12-hour brisket smoked and then grilled in Westgold butter, onion rings, pickles) and **Steve** ($22 — double smashed Angus beef pattie, double cheese, onion rings, crispy bacon). The **Big Kahuna** ($18.50) brings teriyaki sauce and pineapple into the mix alongside beef, bacon, cheese and onion rings.
The lamb is notable: the **Adam Lambert** ($18) is a 12-hour roast lamb burger with cranberry, camembert, apple slaw, and lettuce — a cut above the typical burger bar offering.
On the chicken side, the range covers fried, grilled, and something more unusual. **DNT** ($15) keeps it simple with fried chicken, hash brown, cheese and lettuce. **Angry Eagle** ($19) goes bigger — fried chicken, pineapple, onion rings, lettuce, avocado, teriyaki sauce and sriracha. **Afternoon Delight** ($18) features panther chicken with apricot sauce, bacon, deep fried cream cheese, lettuce and avocado.
Pulled pork features too: **Buzz** ($18) with 12-hour pulled pork, gravy, apple slaw, caramelised onions and sriracha, and **Telling Porkies** ($24) with glazed pulled pork, bacon and crumbed mac n cheese.
The vegan menu is taken seriously. **BOOM! BOOM! NUTRIBOOM!** ($15) pairs jackfruit with a veggie pattie, pineapple, avocado and tomato. **Hakuna Matata!** ($14) uses coconut bacon with kumara, beetroot, apricot sauce, lettuce, avocado and tomato. **The Ex Girlfriend** ($18) features vegan fried chicken and coco-bacon with the option to add deep fried cream cheese or halloumi for $3. A keto option — **Tuhaka Tucker** ($18) with grilled chicken, bacon, egg, halloumi, lettuce, tomato, avocado and aioli — comes on a low carb keto bun.
The Bacon & Brunch section has its own character: **Wake 'n' Bacon** ($18) with bacon, egg, halloumi, hash brown and hollandaise; a classic **BLAT** ($15); and the **Avocado Afficionado** ($18) built on smashed avo with tomato, halloumi and seeds, with optional egg (+$4) and bacon (+$6).
Small bites include **Pork Belly Burnt Ends** ($16), **Buffalo Wings x4** ($16), **Jalapeno Poppers** ($14) with aioli and red pepper jam, **Wontons x4** ($11), **NUGGIES** ($14 — free range chicken tenderloin nuggets), and vegetable sides including burnt broccoli ($13), deep fried cauliflower ($13), and a dozen onion rings ($13). Fries come plain ($9) or loaded with gravy, cheese sauce and bacon ($15). And for dessert, **Donuts** ($10) come with a choice of caramel or chocolate sauce — both with pineapple slices.
A kids menu offers a burger with choice of beef, bacon, chicken or vegetarian (with tomato sauce, lettuce and cheese), or a small chicken and chips — both at $10 as Luke I Am Your Father.
