A good variety store is a place to find a bit of everything in one stop, and the best ones stock useful extras and are happy to help you find them. Stock changes often, so a quick look around can turn up bargains, but check labels, age warnings and quality on toys and electrical items. For party shopping, ask about helium and balloon arrangements ahead of the day, since helium balloons lose lift after several hours. Regulars drop in before birthdays and school terms to stock up on small items.
For people in Shirley and north-east Christchurch, POCKetSAVE on Marshland Road is a local place to browse for crafts, party supplies and gifts.
