A Café With a Conscience
Christchurch has taken notice. Untouched World Kitchen was voted the city's best cafe three years running by Avenues Magazine, recognition the team attributes to simply doing things properly: cooking with the seasons, sourcing locally and wasting as little as possible. The menu is mapped from the design stage to minimise food waste — even carrot peels are fried up into crunchy garnishes for salads.
That ethos runs through everything. Under its Business for Good philosophy, the company pursues doing good beyond the bounds of its own four walls, and every coffee purchased helps families in Ethiopia gain access to a day of lifesaving clean water. Guests have helped provide more than 209,802 days of clean water so far — and counting.
What's on the Plate
The all-day menu is served until 2pm and changes with the seasons. Breakfasts lean hearty and wholesome: cinnamon and almond porridge, thick-cut brioche French toast with spiced red wine poached pears, and the Untouched World Benedict — potato and herb rosti, wilted spinach, hollandaise and soft poached eggs finished with beetroot powder. A karaage fried chicken eggs Benedict with kumara rosti and sriracha hollandaise is the indulgent pick, while The Kickstarter covers the big-breakfast brief.
Lunch is just as considered. Super Salads are built on quinoa, brown rice, lentils and black beans with a ginger and turmeric dressing; the vegan Hippie Bowl pairs charred and raw vegetables with hummus, crispy tofu and beetroot miso; and the Pumpkin Smash stacks feta, pomegranate and a poached egg on charcoal bread. Heartier appetites are covered by four-hour braised beef cheek, pan-fried salmon, sticky chicken and a creamy seafood chowder loaded with prawns, mussels, clams and tarakihi. Chicken bao buns and chunky fries round out the smaller picks.
Save room for the cabinet: date or cheese scones, carrot cake, raspberry brownie, ginger crunch, key lime pie and a rotating line-up of raw vegan slices. Smoothies such as the Clean & Green — kiwifruit crush, avocado, spinach and apple — sit alongside locally roasted coffee served every which way, from piccolos to iced matchas with cold foam, plus New Zealand wine, craft beer and cider.
The Setting
Inside, earthy hues and natural materials create a warm, calm room made for lingering over locally roasted coffee. In the warmer months the native garden offers a peaceful spot for al fresco dining; in winter there is a fire to relax beside. It is a genuinely unique destination for refined, zero-waste cuisine — and a handy stop before or after a flight.
