About Scoundrel

Scoundrel is a converted warehouse on Saint Asaph Street in Christchurch Central City, slinging tacos and pouring cheeky wines since the end of 2023. Born from a crew of hospo lifers chasing the dream, the space pairs a 1950s Austin truck, jungle vibes and comfy couches with a window straight into the on-site roastery of Rad Roasting Co.

The kitchen runs all day: soft corn tortillas stacked with bold, fresh flavours from 12pm, plus daytime and evening menus covering everything from The Scoundrel big brekkie and whiskey-maple waffles to Scoundrel Poutine, pork belly & mash and a brownie tiramisu. Almost every dish is or can be made vegan or gluten free — just let the team know.

Tap wines, top-notch beer, handpicked drops and proper coffee round it out. Dog-friendly with treats included, community-minded and proudly unpretentious — swing by for a morning brew, a long lunch or a full-send evening.

Scoundrel Christchurch: Tacos, All-Day Brunch & On-Site Coffee Roasting on Saint Asaph Street

Walk into Scoundrel on Saint Asaph Street and it takes a minute to decide what to look at first: a 1950s Austin truck parked inside a converted warehouse, jungle greenery everywhere you glance, comfy couches that make it very hard to leave, and — tucked behind the bar — a window straight into a working coffee roastery. This is Scoundrel's take on old school hospitality on the east side of Christchurch Central City, and it has been slinging tacos and pouring cheeky wines since opening at the end of 2023.

The place was born from a crew of hospo lifers chasing the dream, and the vibe they've built is proudly unpretentious: community-minded, dog-friendly (treats included) and serious about flavour without any of the fuss. Coffee comes from their mates at Rad Roasting Co, who roast single origins and blends fresh on site — bright, punchy and smooth, and you can watch it happen through the glass. Tap wines, top-notch beer and handpicked drops round out the drinks list.

Tacos are the headliner

The taco line runs 9am to 2pm and again 4pm to 9pm every day, with tacos hitting the menu from 12pm. Each one is built on a fresh soft corn tortilla with black beans, pickled onion, coriander and a side of salsa — you just pick the filling: chargrilled chicken, pulled pork, braised beef, charred veg & chickpea, or vegan chicken or vegan beef. Add-ons like pea & avo guac, vegan queso, chipotle sour cream and charred pineapple salsa are there for anyone building their perfect stack.

From big brekkies to full-send evenings

Daytime, the menu reads like a greatest-hits list of brunch done properly. The Scoundrel piles scrambled or poached eggs, hash, black beans, creamy mushrooms, pea & avo guac, greens and salsa onto ciabatta; waffles come with crispy bacon, fried banana and whiskey maple sauce; and there's mushrooms on toast, eggs on toast, a flat wrap, a chicken burger, chicken & chips and an ever-changing Buddha Bowl. Weekends add house-made granola and a Breads and Spreads board, plus smoothies like the Basic Big Boi and Berry'd Treasure. The cabinet, stacked with extra options including bakes from local legend Full Time Tart, fills any gaps.

From 4pm the kitchen pivots into evening mode. Small plates cover toasted garlic flatbread, garlic & miso charred broccoli, Pedro's fried cauliflower, pork belly bites and fried chicken tenders, while the Scoundrel Poutine — beer-battered fries, pork gravy and Evansdale cheese curds — and a parmesan-crusted mac 'n' cheese do the heavy lifting. When you want something bigger, there's crispy pork belly with wasabi mash, a loaded taco bowl, chicken 'n' waffles with bourbon & walnut maple syrup, or the Scoundrel Platter of meats, cheeses, antipasti and pickles. Dessert runs from a triple-chocolate plate to a Rad Roasting Co brownie tiramisu.

Come as you are

Backing local isn't a tagline here — it's how they roll, teaming up with small independent Christchurch makers and keeping the welcome warm for two- and four-legged guests alike (the natural dog treats come courtesy of Best for Pets). Doors open at 9am every day, with Monday to Thursday and Sunday wrapping up at 9pm and Friday and Saturday running to 10pm. Whether it's a morning brew, a long lunch or a full-send evening, the crew at Scoundrel reckon the hype is real — and they'd love you to come and check.
