About Epic Landscape Design

Epic Landscape Design is a family-run horticultural landscape design business based in Christchurch, led by Registered Master Landscaper Luke Robertson. Luke has worked in the horticultural and landscaping industry since 1997, with a background spanning tree specialism, managing a tree nursery, unusual and architectural plant species, and developing a design studio at a previous employer.

The business designs landscapes across styles from cottage to contemporary, with services ranging from a starting consultation through to full hard and soft landscape design, planting design, and plant sourcing. Three tiered design packages — Essentials, Elements and Signature Concept Plans — let clients choose between a streamlined hand-sketched layout and a fully refined plan with 3D modelling and detailed documentation.

Beyond design, Epic Landscape Design offers construction drawings, 3D modelling, lighting plans, horticultural consultancy and maintenance with bi-annual site visits, and can pass finished designs on to a select group of recommended landscape construction teams, staying involved through the build if requested.

Epic Landscape Design: Christchurch's Family-Run Landscape Design Studio

Epic Landscape Design is a family-run horticultural landscape design business based in Christchurch, built around the expertise of Registered Master Landscaper Luke Robertson. Luke has worked in horticulture and landscaping since 1997, giving him nearly three decades to develop a design style that ranges comfortably from cottage gardens through to contemporary outdoor spaces.

A Deep Horticultural Background

Luke's career spans more than just design work. He has specialised in trees, managed the growth and health of a tree nursery, worked with unusual and architectural plant species, and helped develop a new design studio at a previous employer. That breadth of experience feeds directly into his approach at Epic Landscape Design, where the goal is to ensure clients get the right plants, shrubs and trees for their specific soil and climate, not just a design that looks good on paper.

Where a Project Starts

Every project begins with a Consultation, where Luke visits the site to explore a client's ideas and desires for their outdoor living area. Following the visit, he emails a detailed brief capturing what was discussed, along with a fee proposal for either a planting design or a full landscape design. From there, clients can move into Planting Design — scaled plans showing individual plant varieties and placement based on the existing garden — or Plant Sourcing, where Luke uses his horticultural qualifications to source and supply quality plants and trees for clients doing their own installation work.

Full Landscape Design and Design Packages

For clients wanting the complete process, Full Landscape Design begins with a consultation and site survey, moves through a preliminary concept plan for hard landscaping, and finishes with a full hard and soft landscaping design including plant positions and a complete plant list. To suit different budgets and levels of detail, Epic Landscape Design also offers three tiered Design Packages. The Essentials Concept Plan is a streamlined, hand-sketched design for sections up to 700m², including an onsite consultation, a scaled sketch plan and planting recommendations. The Elements Concept Plan steps up to a more detailed hand-drawn plan for sections up to 1000m², with a design brief, site measure if required, and an in-person presentation. The Signature Concept Plan is the most comprehensive option, including 3D modelling, a CAD drafted colour presentation plan, a full planting plan with a maintenance guide, and dimensioned construction plan details.

Beyond the Initial Design

Epic Landscape Design also offers a range of supporting services: Construction Drawings to guide a contractor through building unique hard landscaping elements, 3D Modelling for a clearer sense of the finished space, and Lighting Plans to illuminate paths, decks and features while extending time spent outdoors. For clients wanting their garden looked after long-term, Horticultural Consultancy & Maintenance includes bi-annual site visits to advise on plant health and training. When it comes time to build, Epic Landscape Design can pass a finished design to a select group of recommended construction teams, and Luke can stay involved through the build to help ensure the design's integrity is maintained.

What Clients Say

Clients have described Luke's designs as sophisticated, site-appropriate and thoughtfully considered from multiple vantage points and seasons. Several reviewers mention returning to Luke for multiple garden projects, and others note his ability to work within budget constraints without sacrificing the key elements on a client's wish list.
