Shirley Wellness Centre is a multi-therapist holistic health clinic in Christchurch, bringing together massage therapy, chiropractic, podiatry, yoga and Feldenkrais, and Pilates under one roof. The centre was founded by husband-and-wife massage therapist team Heather Wright and Charles McGrosky, who returned from the USA in 1991 to start their professional massage practice and also taught at the Canterbury College of Natural Medicine.
After the 2010–2011 earthquakes, they moved from their original art deco cottage on Hills Rd to a purpose-built space in the Freemasons building at 9 Shirley Rd. Since then the centre has grown steadily, adding acupuncture services, then taking over the adjoining lease in 2019 to bring in podiatry and chiropractic, along with a teaching space for yoga and movement classes. The most recent additions are a nutritionist and a counsellor.
The centre's collective of practitioners includes a team of massage therapists, chiropractors, a podiatrist, a yoga and Feldenkrais teacher, and a Pilates instructor, all working toward the centre's stated aim of providing holistic health care in an intimate, welcoming and professional environment.
For Christchurch residents looking for a single place to address pain, injury, or general wellbeing, Shirley Wellness Centre brings together a collective of allied health practitioners working from one purpose-built site on Shirley Rd.
The centre traces back to 1991, when massage therapist husband-and-wife team Heather Wright and Charles McGrosky returned from the USA to begin their professional massage career. Alongside building their own practice, they taught at the Canterbury College of Natural Medicine, gradually expanding into a multi-therapist clinic centred on bodywork.
The 2010–2011 Christchurch earthquakes forced a move — the pair sold the art deco cottage on Hills Rd they'd worked from and relocated around the corner to a purpose-built space in the Freemasons building at 9 Shirley Rd. From there, the centre kept growing: acupuncture services were added, then in 2019 the adjoining lease was taken over to bring podiatry and chiropractic into the fold, along with a dedicated teaching space for yoga and movement classes. Most recently, a nutritionist and a counsellor have joined the centre.
Christchurch Therapeutic Massage anchors the bodywork side of the centre, with a team of seven experienced massage therapists working to relieve pain, restore movement, and help clients get back to work or sport.
Revive Chiropractic offers gentle, specific chiropractic care, with particular attention to infants, children, pregnant women, athletes and families, using current techniques to support nervous system function.
Foot Werks Podiatry addresses the kind of foot problems that quietly limit daily life — foot pain, heel pain, ingrown toenails and ankle injuries — helping clients get back to the activities they enjoy.
For movement-based therapy, Amazing Movement runs small yoga classes focused on relaxation and restoring body and mind, alongside Feldenkrais classes exploring movement patterns to build ease and comfort in the body. Your Space Pilates, taught by Mary Hurrell, rounds out the movement offering with interactive classes designed to meet each client at their own level.
The centre also includes The Studio, a light, bright 42sqm teaching space available for hire, equipped with trestle tables, chairs, massage tables and a data projector, with a shared bathroom and kitchen, disabled access, and plenty of parking.
Across its practitioners, the centre positions itself to help with a wide range of issues: work and sports injuries, foot care, headaches and migraines, back pain, mobility limitations, and general stress reduction — often through a combination of the different therapies available on-site.
NZ heptathlete Rebecca Wardell has described the centre as offering "the best massage service in Christchurch," noting that as an athlete she has seen a number of different therapists there and found them all highly skilled and experienced.
The centre is based at 9 Shirley Rd in Christchurch, with each practitioner group — from massage to chiropractic to Pilates — bookable through their own dedicated page. Whether the need is injury recovery, ongoing pain management, or simply a resolution to look after yourself better, the centre's collective approach means several kinds of care are available without having to travel between clinics.
