Fitness Canterbury is a 24-hour gym in Christchurch with a long history — it traces back to around 1990 as 'Better Bodies', moved into its current building in 1997, was renamed from 'Acropolis' to Fitness Canterbury in 2005, and has been run by current owners Kent Gibson and Scott Mazey since they purchased it in June 2009, the longest-serving owners in its history. Some members have belonged for over 30 years.
The gym offers three membership tiers, including Silver and Gold plans, starting from $14.95 a week, with the first two weeks free on any 12-month membership and no joining fee attached to those plans. Members get 24-hour access (18 years and over), while 15 to 18 year olds can join and use the gym unsupervised during staffed hours with a parent or guardian present at sign-up.
Alongside the gym floor, Fitness Canterbury runs a personal training team, fitness classes, and an in-house TrueForm Physio & Pilates service led by physiotherapists Justine and Vanessa, who bring 25 years of combined experience. The gym also stocks a range of supplements from established brands, and offers off-street parking and shower facilities for members.
Long before it was called Fitness Canterbury, this Christchurch gym existed under a different name. Its story goes back to around 1990, when it operated as 'Better Bodies' in a building just across the road from its current location. The gym's current owners were actually members back then, joining from 1992 onwards, well before they ever owned the place.
The business moved into its present building in 1997 and, after a stint known as 'Acropolis', was renamed Fitness Canterbury in 2005. In June 2009, Kent Gibson and Scott Mazey bought the gym outright, making them the longest-serving owners in its history. That continuity shows in the membership base too — some of the gym's longest-standing members have been training there for more than 30 years.
Fitness Canterbury runs three membership tiers, including named Silver and Gold plans, with pricing starting from $14.95 a week. New members joining on any 12-month membership get their first two weeks free, and there's no joining fee attached to those plans. Month-to-month memberships, which can be cancelled anytime, carry a joining fee ranging from $50 to $90 instead.
Access itself runs 24 hours a day, though members need to be 18 or older to use that access. Younger members aged 15 to 18 can join and train unsupervised during staffed hours, provided a parent or guardian is present at sign-up and signs a guarantee form. Members under 15 can join only under special circumstances, and must be accompanied by a Personal Trainer each visit, with trainer fees applying.
For anyone travelling, Fitness Canterbury's main memberships run through Debit Success, which is affiliated with gyms around New Zealand — members heading away on business or holiday can arrange a FIT PASS to use an affiliated gym outside Christchurch.
Personal training is a core part of the gym's culture, with many members first connecting with a trainer through the Silver or Gold membership plans. Named trainers Kent Gibson, Shane Elsey, and Chris Weddell each have member testimonials describing them as motivating, knowledgeable, and focused on results beyond just the gym floor.
Rather than running a packed class timetable, Fitness Canterbury has, after trial and member feedback, settled on a smaller set of classes it considers genuinely effective. Alongside general fitness training, the gym also houses TrueForm Physio & Pilates, run by physiotherapists Justine and Vanessa, who bring 25 years of combined clinical experience. Their clinical Pilates work is designed to suit a wide age range, from 15-year-olds through to those in their 60s.
The gym offers plenty of off-street parking for members, in car parks marked 'Fit-C'. Both men's and women's changing facilities include three showers each. Fitness Canterbury also stocks a supplement range from established brands including Balance, Switch, Musashi, Metaphysics, and Optimum Nutrition.
Staffed reception hours run Monday to Thursday from 9am to 8pm and Friday from 9am to 3pm, with no staff on-site on weekends or public holidays — though 24-hour facility access continues regardless. Weekday mornings between 6am and 8am, and evenings from 5pm to 7pm, tend to be the busiest times, though the gym notes it's large enough that waiting for equipment is rare even then.
Fitness Canterbury's own framing — "real people, real results" — comes through in its member testimonials, which repeatedly mention the quality of equipment, the friendliness of staff, and a sense of not feeling out of place regardless of fitness level. For a gym with three decades of history and members who've stuck around for just as long, that culture appears to be the throughline.
