New Brighton Community Preschool and Nursery is a not-for-profit, child-directed early learning centre at 109 Beresford Street, a short walk from the New Brighton beach. It has been part of the seaside community for 40 years and takes children from the nursery years through to the start of primary school. Play is the main way children learn here, and the team builds learning around each child's own interests.
The centre puts relationships with children and their whānau at the centre of its work. Many of its children come from different parts of the world, and families are invited to share their language and culture with everyone. The centre also teaches te reo Māori and the idea of kaitiakitanga, caring for the centre and the local environment, and it draws on the nearby beach and natural surroundings in its learning.
