Why Sumner is the easiest weekend in Christchurch

If you have one Saturday in Christchurch and the weather looks half-decent, point the car east. Sumner is twenty minutes from town, the road hugs the harbour the whole way, and the village itself is small enough to park once and forget about it.

Coffee first

Start at Grana Cafe on the marine parade. Sit outside if you can — the heater bench faces the Norfolk pines and you can hear the surf. Their pistachio croissant only comes out on Sundays, but the everyday cardamom bun does not let you down.

Walk it off

Two options, both flat: go left along the esplanade towards Cave Rock and Shag Rock, or take the little track behind the surf club up over the headland to Taylors Mistake. The headland walk is forty-five minutes round trip and the view from the top is the kind of thing you forget until you see it again.

Lunch on the sand

If the sun is out, get fish and chips from the village and eat them on the beach. If the southerly is up, duck into one of the cafes off the main strip and order the chowder.

Stay for the sunset

The sun does not set over the water from Sumner — it sets behind the Port Hills behind you, which throws this slow gold light onto the bay for about twenty minutes. Hang around for it. The drive back through Ferrymead at dusk is its own little reward.

Sumner is not the destination people pretend it is. It is the easy yes when you cannot decide.
