Sport is at the heart of the Cossie. The spacious pool room holds four 8 ball tables, five snooker tables, 12 dart boards and indoor bowls mats, and there are four squash courts. The Sports Bar has an attached Gaming Room with 18 machines and an onsite TAB, with flat screen TVs strategically placed throughout the club, and Wi-fi is available.
Beyond the facilities, 14 sports and social sections — from fishing, golf, darts, cards, 8 ball and poker to wine, squash, rugby, league, netball and indoor bowls, plus Cossie Kidz for the youngsters — give members plenty of ways to have fun and meet new friends. The Wine Section shows how sociable the programme is. It meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm and usually tastes three white wines and two reds, accompanied by cheese platters, with a gift basket raffle on offer. The year kicks off in February with a wine trail before monthly tastings begin, and the calendar adds special nights such as blind tastings, a beer and chutney night where members bring homemade chutneys and a prize is awarded for the best, a November theme night, and a Christmas meal with quizzes and games. Joining costs $5, with tastings at $10 for section members and $15 for non-members.
The club is explicit about being family focused: children 17 years and under are welcome in the club seven days a week, up until 9pm, and Cossie Kidz gives the younger crowd their own way in. That makes the Cossie as much a community living room as a sports venue.
Annual membership is deliberately affordable: full membership is $60, a full member and partner (where the partner has been a current member for a year) is $100, seniors over 60 pay $35, or $60 with a senior partner, and juniors aged 15 to 17 pay just $10. The club is open Tuesday from 3pm to 10pm, Wednesday from 3pm to 11pm, Thursday and Friday from 3pm to midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 1am; it closes on Mondays.
