About The Alderman

The Alderman is a West Auckland landmark with a long history of hospitality and cherished local memories, sitting in the heart of Henderson surrounded by native bush and lush park. Licensed and independently owned, it pairs brunch classics and seasonal eats with eighthirty coffee, craft beer and wine, in a bright, greenery-framed room with a covered outdoor area.

The all-day menu runs from the famous-style Big Breakfast, eggs benedict on crispy hash, chilli scramble and hotcakes through to sirloin steak, chicken schnitzel, a house-corned-beef Reuben and slow-cooked lamb shoulder. There's a dedicated kids' menu, gluten-free ingredients are available, and several dishes can be made vegan on request. On the drinks side, expect New Zealand wine, local craft beer, sparkling, mimosas and a house-recipe Bloody Mary.

Family friendly and right beside Falls Park with the Tui Glen Playground close by, it's an easy spot to make a day of it. Good dogs are welcome outside, functions and catering are on offer, and groups of six or more are encouraged to book. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 3pm; closed Mondays and public holidays.

The Alderman, Henderson: West Auckland's Landmark Cafe for All-Day Brunch, Wine and Coffee

There are cafes you pass through, and there are cafes a neighbourhood grows up with. The Alderman, on Alderman Drive in the heart of Henderson, is the second kind: a West Auckland landmark with a long history of hospitality and a stockpile of cherished local memories. It sits surrounded by native bush and lush park, and its glass doors and wide windows frame that greenery from almost every seat — it's hard to believe the Henderson centre is just minutes away.

Today The Alderman is a licensed, independently owned cafe and venue. The idea is simple: brunch classics, seasonal eats, eighthirty coffee, craft beer and wine, served in a bright, plant-filled room or out on the covered terrace. Stay for a slow breakfast, a long lunch, or a drink in the sun — the kitchen runs the full menu all day, every day it's open.

Brunch classics, all day long

The all-day menu leans into proper brunch done well. The Alderman Big Breakfast is the anchor: two eggs, a bacon chop, tomato, creamy mushrooms, hashcake and hollandaise on sourdough. Eggs Benedict arrives on crispy hash, with a choice of bacon or creamy mushrooms — or topped with salmon if you're pushing the boat out. The chilli scramble, with cottage cheese, harissa and fried curry leaves on grilled flatbread, has a loyal following, while the hotcakes — berry compote, vanilla mascarpone, maple syrup — cover the sweet end.

Lighter starts include granola with mango coconut chia and berry compote (vegan), poached eggs on sourdough, and avocado on cornbread with green-chilli salsa and feta. For one-handed mornings there are sausage muffins: pork and fennel with Swiss cheese, or brisket beef with American cheese, each with a fried egg.

If you're closer to lunch, the kitchen keeps going all day. Chicken schnitzel with savoy-cabbage and fennel slaw, sirloin steak with creamy peppercorn sauce, a Reuben stacked with house corned beef and sauerkraut, and a beef burger with cheddar and Mt Olive pickles all come with fries. The slow-cooked lamb shoulder and marinated chicken are built for long tables — grilled flatbread, hummus, cottage cheese, harissa and pickled vegetables. Gluten-free ingredients are available (just let the team know about any dietary requirements), and a number of dishes can be made vegan.

Coffee, craft beer and a spritz in the sun

Coffee is eighthirty, poured from open to close. Being licensed, the list also runs deep on the good stuff: a New Zealand-leaning wine line-up with The Hunting Lodge seasonal chardonnay and rosé from Hawke's Bay, Marlborough sauvignon blanc, Central Otago pinot gris and pinot noir, and a McLaren Vale shiraz, plus Bizzarro Spritz and King Valley prosecco. Craft beer fans are well looked after with Garage Project, Hapi Daze, Sawmill and Hallertau alongside Heineken and Corona. Elsewhere: a mimosa, the kitchen's special-recipe Bloody Mary (or the alcohol-free Bloody Shame), and a Tanqueray gin and tonic with East Imperial yuzu or grapefruit tonic.

Made for gatherings

The Alderman doubles as a venue, with catering and function options for occasions large and small, and gift vouchers if you'd rather let someone else choose. Walk-ins are encouraged, but groups of six or more should book by email so the table is ready — the covered outdoor area is ideal for bigger parties. It's a family-friendly spot right beside Falls Park and close to the Tui Glen Playground, so it's easy to make a day of it, and good dogs are welcome outside. Parking is in The Falls Carpark, which has a limited number of free two-hour parks.

The practical bits: open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 3pm, closed Mondays and public holidays. Bookings and enquiries go by email — an actual person will respond, so allow a little patience.

Whether it's a salmon benedict at the window, steak and fries at nine in the morning because you can, or a spritz under the covered roof while the kids wear themselves out in the park next door, The Alderman does what good neighbourhood landmarks do: it makes Henderson feel like somewhere worth staying a while.
