Harlequin Musical Theatre: Decades of Community Stagecraft and Musical Magic

For more than six decades, Harlequin Musical Theatre has served as a creative home for local actors, singers, technicians, and theatre enthusiasts. Originally formed in 1959 under the name Howick Light Opera Group, the organisation has built a rich legacy on the stage, staging more than 90 productions over the past fifty years. From small-cast comic plays and classic Gilbert and Sullivan operettas to major modern musicals and New Zealand premieres, the theatre has remained steadfast in its mission to deliver high-calibre performing arts entertainment to audiences of all ages.

Over the course of its storied history, Harlequin has proudly hosted the New Zealand premieres of notable titles such as *A Christmas Carol* and *Rent*, alongside classic and contemporary productions including *West Side Story*, *The Witches of Eastwick*, *Steaming*, *Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat*, *Little Shop of Horrors*, and *Jesus Christ Superstar*. Its standing within the performing arts community is backed by active participation in the Northern Area Performance Theatre Awards (NAPTA) and longstanding membership with Musical Theatre New Zealand.

The Boutique Theatre Experience

At the heart of the Harlequin experience is its dedicated, well-equipped boutique theatre, which seats 140 guests. The compact auditorium creates an intimate atmosphere where patrons sit remarkably close to the action, making musical numbers, orchestral sounds, and nuanced dramatic performances feel immediate and personal.

Beyond regular seasonal show runs, the venue also operates as a community cultural resource. The theatre is available for venue hire, and organizations or productions seeking period garments, specialized stage attire, or set dressing can make use of Harlequin's extensive wardrobe, costume, and props hire departments.

Powered by Volunteer Passion

Harlequin Musical Theatre operates through the dedication of its volunteers. From the committee members who oversee governance to the carpenters constructing sets, lighting technicians, painters, wardrobe stylists, and front-of-house ushers, every performance is made possible by people who share a love for stagecraft. Performers and crew members come together from across the wider region to collaborate, audition, rehearse, and bring imaginative stories to life.

Alongside full-scale musical runs, the theatre maintains an active calendar of social and community gatherings, including open mic nights, quiz evenings, and audition workshops. Whether stepping into the boutique auditorium as an audience member, stepping onto the stage as an auditionee, or stepping into the workshop as a crew volunteer, Harlequin offers a welcoming space grounded in shared creativity and theatrical craft.
